Best hurling supporters

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In terms of numbers cork are the best supporters in the country but this is all reletive, it is the 2nd most populated county in ROI and hurling is the no.1 sport in the county so something would be wrong if they didnt have a huge following.

Dont think any county is immune from having bandwagon supporters, every county has there handcore supporters and bandwagon element.Yes a huge limerick support was there on Saturday but there league semi final in the gaelic grounds against galway only drew 9000, on the same day us and tipp in nowlan drew 19,000.

Same appiles to my county we had 40-45k supporters at the leinster final this year i remember been at a leinster quarter final replay against dubin in 2013 where less than a thousand wexford supporters travelled to parnell park.

bear in mind though that 9k was nearly all limerick -not a huge galway crowd went
and our support for 21s was really good this year, that team as minors brough around 8000 fans to the all ireland final in 2014 paying 80 a pop

all teams have the bandwagon all sports have the bandwagon, if it wasnt for the bandwagon the all ireland hurling final would be played in from of 20k

best support is saw this year was the 40/50 noisy wexicans who went to limk v wexford football qualifer this years, paltry attendance in total around 600 i think

limerick fans are gas, they are claiming they are the best fans in the country?i was at a championship game down there 2 years ago and there was about 5-6k there on a fine saturday evening?the best ones always appear when the team are winning...."
Well I was there that evening and I was particularly annoyed that the start of the game was delayed due to the heavy crowd coming into the game. 5,000 my eye.

I'd say cork are best hurling support they always have huge crowd even in Sunday you could see it despite them having poor team these days"
Ah come on. I have followed the Munster Championship with the past fifty years and I have seen days, when Cork were struggling, and they have had very poor support. Two days that come to mind are the first round of the hurling championship in 1996. There was 26,000 at the the game in Cork and about three quarters of them were from Limerick. The other was the Munster Football Final, between the same Counties in 2009 or 10 when all of 9,000 people surged into Pairc Ui Caoimh.

Replying To preddan:  "As for Bad or Disapointing Support for Teams, Kilkenny , Laois and Galway come to mind.
Kilkenny probably is for the fact its a small enough county in population terms and they win so much anyway.
Laois for a traditional Hurling county has been pretty poor nearly all of the time. Does club come before County I wonder there.
Galway, Galway is one Team that definitely should get more support, its a major mystery why they don't. All their Games even last year on the way to the final, there was small enough crowds at them, only 30000 at semi final. I agree with Faithful in a way in his previous post as regards the supporters views on their county Team. It looks like Galway may win a few All Irelands before the crowds start going back."
Some of those 'bad disappointing' fans couldn't get tickets to the recent hurling final. Serves them right too, for being so bad & disappointing!

I've heard at least 1,000 Galway fans observe that they saw less than 500 Galway fans at a Galway /Leitrim championship match in the mid '90s. I was there myself, but I'm sure there were a 'minority' who sat at home anticipating another day out, even in that pre-backdoor era.

The best way to answer this is on league attendances not championship. And then look more towards who travels best. Away fans on a bleak February afternoon or evening thats the real bedt supporters. Not those who turn up for the big day in August or september

That could have been the drawn game in Carrick-on-Shannon in 1993 - there was hardly anyone from Galway at it. The replay was in Tuam and the Leitrim fans still outnumbered us by about 3 to 1. Plenty of fair-weather fans in Galway back then.
