In terms of numbers cork are the best supporters in the country but this is all reletive, it is the 2nd most populated county in ROI and hurling is the no.1 sport in the county so something would be wrong if they didnt have a huge following. bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 12/09/2017 01:20:23 2045112 Link 0 |

Well I was there that evening and I was particularly annoyed that the start of the game was delayed due to the heavy crowd coming into the game. 5,000 my eye.

Ah come on. I have followed the Munster Championship with the past fifty years and I have seen days, when Cork were struggling, and they have had very poor support. Two days that come to mind are the first round of the hurling championship in 1996. There was 26,000 at the the game in Cork and about three quarters of them were from Limerick. The other was the Munster Football Final, between the same Counties in 2009 or 10 when all of 9,000 people surged into Pairc Ui Caoimh.

Some of those 'bad disappointing' fans couldn't get tickets to the recent hurling final. Serves them right too, for being so bad & disappointing!

I've heard at least 1,000 Galway fans observe that they saw less than 500 Galway fans at a Galway /Leitrim championship match in the mid '90s. I was there myself, but I'm sure there were a 'minority' who sat at home anticipating another day out, even in that pre-backdoor era. The best way to answer this is on league attendances not championship. And then look more towards who travels best. Away fans on a bleak February afternoon or evening thats the real bedt supporters. Not those who turn up for the big day in August or september Brianmac78 (Dublin) - Posts: 1168 - 14/09/2017 18:42:01 2046074 Link 0 |
That could have been the drawn game in Carrick-on-Shannon in 1993 - there was hardly anyone from Galway at it. The replay was in Tuam and the Leitrim fans still outnumbered us by about 3 to 1. Plenty of fair-weather fans in Galway back then.
