That 1982 Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A treat for the Offaly and Kerry folk tonight at 9.30 on RTE2. Probably more enjoyable for Offaly though.

The 4 in a row Kerry team and the last time the 5 in a row was attempted in football and all the drama that unfolded with it.
Still one of the most famous games ever played.
The T-shirts were put on ice and the the train home was a quiet one.
Still worth a watch for all GAA fans.

Incredible when you think of it. A real dagger when that goal was scored.

Seamus Darby never bought a pint in Offaly since.

It was a definite push in the back for the goal. Everyone and the ref wanted Kerry beat!

Incredible indeed. Against all odds, written off, evryone saying "its over", victory snatched at the last minute. Its those one off, 1% type of situations that make you watch sport to the VERY END.

Anything can happen in sports, its why we all love it so much.

In fairness all the bigger counties have used a few 'dark arts' on the way to All Ireland victory

I was at a club game that day and couldn't get to Croke Park. I watched the game in a pub in Mullingar and was amazed at the number of Westmeath people who wanted Kerry to win ......or did they just want Offaly to lose?

The wishing your neigbour well and telling them "we hope you win" is the biggest lie in the GAA.

It amazing how the Kerry players reacted immediately after the goal. There was time to get an equaliser, but they seemed to freeze - almost as if they couldn't believe what had happened, and they didn't know what to do.

My two takeaways from watching it properly for the first time is that I felt the two frees that Connor kicked towards the end that brought Offaly within touching distance were tame enough compared to some of the fouls not given throughout the course of the game. And secondly, Kerry kicked some excellent points after the penalty miss, and for all intents and purposes were similar to the current Dublin team in their composure up until the goal totally deflated them.

The standard was a lot better than I expected too. High skill and fitness levels from both teams. You'd know where Tomas O'Se got his football from anyway- Uncle Paidi scored Kerry's last point and it was as good a score as you'd see today in terms of movement. A Tomas O'Se special.

Offaly really did keep at it the whole way through and Kerry just never really could push the lead out to safety. The goal was the killer blow but the save by Furlong rattled Kerry and gave Offaly a great boost when they needed it.
Looking back at it there was an awful lot of loose kicks and hit and hope stuff too. I remember seeing a documentary about O Dwyer a few years back and he saying it still haunts him. Indeed Mikey Sheehy said the same afterwards and sure how could it not.
Sadly for Darby it probably lead to a lot of hard times also. It was almost as if it was fate.
I know Kerry won a 3 in a row after but it's that game that will probably always be the one that
comes up when that team is talked about.
It was gas seeing the old stands and the odd teddy wearing a jersey and the kit without any sponsorship. The other thing I suppose is just how far backwards Offaly has slid since those years.

It was a great Offaly team and they deserved a Sam. A lot of people say they were lucky or that Kerry threw it away but Offaly matched them stride for stride in that game and played some great ball. I loved watching Richie, Matt Connor, the Lowrys and the dashing Liam Currams. A smashing team.

Great to see it again last night, youd still get excited as the ball is kicked into Darby. Offaly had great matchs other years ie 1980 & 81 as well with Offaly so it was no flash in the pan. Pity to see Offaly gone from the top table.

Ah sure we've given teams some of the greatest days of their lives, it seems to be true that the secret ingredient of a great game is kerry losing, Northern teams used to say beating kerry in an allireland final felt like winning 2 allirelands.

I think between RTÉ and TG4 they've showed about 10 games where we lost and only 1 game that we won, if people were only new to the game of football they'd never know or think that we're the most successful county in gaa.

Come on RTÉ and TG4 stop anti kerry crap and show a few from all our glory years :-)

It's great beating ye alright but sure facile wins in the Munster championship and strolling to AI victories with 3 wins doesn't make for much entertainment or glory. :)

Most successful GAA county, Kerry for sure, but it's another record under threat, Kerry 38 (37 football, 1hurling, Cork (7 + 30), Dublin (29 + 7)

I've seen the 2014 semi final replay shown, as well as the 2014 final. The first was a classic, the latter definitley not, but at least it was a close game.
The truth is almost all of Kerry's final wins have been one-sided games. That doesn't make for good nostalgic tv.
On the other hand, the ones they've lost have tended to be much tighter with more drama.

Did people note Mick O'Dwyer's post match gracious speech in the Offaly dressing room. Offaly and Kerry, he basically said, had played three well contested matches, three years in a row, with Kerry having a bit of luck in the first two and Offaly getting a few breaks that day. Summed it all up really.

Ah sure we can't all just produce a cheque and cash it in to get Sam.
All Ireland's now are nothing but a bank transaction but you Dubs seem to think it's sport, poor craters...
