Sunday Game Hurling Team

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just heard a podcast about the Sunday Game Hurling Team. I might be behind the times but they were up to the half back line. Since 1979 Kilkenny have won 17 All Irelands Tipp and Cork have 6 each. How does Kilkenny only wind up with 1 player of the 1st 7 and JJ Delaney, the best back Kilkenny ever had not get picked?

Because the panelists that picked it are crazy, idiotic anti-Kilkenny zealots!

That's the answer you want isn't it? ;)

What terrible hurlers did they pick?

Using your logic every single player should be from Kilkenny. Not saying you're wrong if they did do that but i guess if you take each position individually it works out that way. While KK has had the best teams the most often it doesn't necessarily translate that they had the best individuals in each slot.

JJ is the best defender I've seen from any county...

The Rock has no business being in the top 3 fullbacks. Willie O'Connor Ollie Canning Jackie Tyrell are 3 that were better then him. And that is just off the top of my head. I would say Cathal Barrett in today's game is also better then the Rock. JJ is a sure pick on any team.

Definitely the best Kilkenny back ever and maybe even the best Kilkenny player ever

Haven't seen what team they picked but they could have picked brilliant players and still not have six better than J J Delaney. We have been blessed to enjoy watching so many great players over the years but Delaney must be right up there with the best.

So name me all the defenders that were better than J J Delaney?

"Delaney is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all-time. In 2003 he won the first of six All-Star awards, while he also made a clean sweep of all the top individual awards, winning the All-Star, Texaco and GPA Hurler of the Year awards. Delaney was also chosen as one of the 125 greatest hurlers of all-time in a 2009 poll. That same year he was chosen on the Leinster team of the past twenty-five years." Wikipedia.

None of them are terrible but they are suppose to be the best. Tell me how JJ Delaney is not one of the best 6 backs to play hurling since 1979. The Rock was good but not one of the top 3 fullbacks. Ollie Canning, Willie O'Connor and Jackie Tyrell were all better then him. I would also say Cathal Barrett in today's game is also better.

Rte gaa do a shortlist of players and then the public vote for the players they want in the positions. Then there does be a podcast each week.So far the team is
Brendan Cummins
Brian Corcoran
Brian Lohan
The rock
Tommy walsh
Brian Whelan
Padraic Maher

Personally would have liked to have seen ollie canning in there but I'm probably a bit biased there :p
Does be be tough to pick players from the poll. Alot of brilliant players to choose from.

JJ was amazing, but sometimes playing in an all conquering team can have a negative impact in that you're performances in the backs don't stand out as much.

Brian Lohan would be the fuil back on my team but I wouldn't get annoyed having JJ in there.

Agree on O'Sullivan. Very good full back but a little bit 'all or nothing' for me. A tad overrated. Still very good mind.

People have different opinions though. I find it amusing that people get so het up about teams like this, or the All-stars, coz so and so got 'snubbed' when in reality there is no right choice, it's a choice between 2 or 3 excellent players.

Players are of their time. Players from 40 years ago are being compared to their peers in their time only. You cannot compare players from different eras. It's the best players in those positions over the years they were playing I'd imagine. They're always skewed when you compared different eras.
Once you put one name in it eliminates another. You cannot do it fairly.

would have picked ollie canning ahead of brian corcoran and jj ahead of the rock.
in fairness,i listened to 1 episode and thought it was cringe, the producer knew nothing about hurling and offered his opinion on everything.

Are you mad or what ?
How would you have Joe Canning, Seamus Callanan and Eoin Kelly in the team. Surely there must be a few Kk forwards you could put in there and be done with it. ;)
