You must be very short on what to write when you use a poster views on here to create an article. Once this current crisis blows over things will return to normal and none of the above restrictions will be required. Yondu (UK) - Posts: 845 - 31/03/2020 15:24:28 2275099 Link 4 |
What article was created? Is their an article on home page of website or do you mean a post in this thread? This crisis will last into medium/long term. We dont know. But it will certainly be quite some time(several months) before things return to normal KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3494 - 31/03/2020 16:03:51 2275101 Link 1 |

If we need to take these measures then it means the virus is still a real threat. Starting up a nationwide competition would be humanitarian suicide given the predicament we are all going through! And if the GAA is about the community and the people in it then it will recognise that and only plan a return to action when we are completely out of the woods with this thing. Of course I will miss not being able to watch or attend matches but not as much as I would miss someone close to me falling victim to this and not recovering. We need to see this thing out in its entirety before we can talk about playing matches amongst tight nit communities or beyond and i think the last paragraph of that post above is a good indication why. People will make mistakes and errors whether deliberately or by accident and the results could be catastrophic again. Be patient and we will be able to appreciate a much better version of what was outlined above. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2385 - 31/03/2020 16:48:03 2275109 Link 1 |
I would assume any changes to the games would probably be like when AIDS first came out. I was a young lad at the time of AIDS first coming around so I don't remember the "Befores and Afters" but both are pretty scary. Was the BLOOD SUB rule due to AIDS? I believe it was. Anyway let's hope it doesn't come to this. Sigh. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2113 - 31/03/2020 21:24:33 2275137 Link 1 |
I'd agree with you here, Sports events and large gathering were the first thing to be stopped and will be one of the last things to be allowed again, and only when the authorities are satisfied that the virus is very much under control. The restrictions will not be rolled back all together, it will be gradual, probably in the reverse order of which they were introduced.

I don't know was it Aids or heipitíteas that that rule was brought in.

So if the championships are cancelled both Tipp and Dublin will be awarded the titles what you make of that people? lilypad (Kildare) - Posts: 1363 - 01/04/2020 07:47:18 2275144 Link 1 |
Ah be kind would you! First, we are a bit short of stuff to write about, for reasons that hardly need further elaboration. Second, stuff like this pandemic will create permanent cultural changes. For instance, people shaking hands (greetings, signs of peace in churches etc.) are very unlikely to survive, even post any formal restrictions. The Japanese were ahead of the game on that one, with the bowing instead of handshaking. Can't see that catching on here though; too polite for most of us.

I dont think so. Back in '88 when the champioship was not played Tipp (H) and limerick (F) were not awarded the titles for that year. When the Leagues were abandoned in the forties teams that won the titles the final year it was played before the War were not awarded titles the year they resumed. No precedent exists for your suggested course of action.

Definitely practices like shaking hands and sharing water bottles have to go .Never made sense anyway. Serious penalties such as life ban for both culprit and recognised team manager will be needed for biting ,spitting, coughing at people, and anything deemed similiar such as 'getting in their face'. This is just not feasible. Sharing water bottles is something that should be minimised anyway and in most cases teams try and do it at training etc. The GAA already try to stop large pitch incursions. It's not always possible. Shaking hands? Banning it? In a contact sport which involves "touch tight" marking. What is the point in that? Spitting. Obviously spitting at an opponent is abhorrent and will rightly see you hit with a long ban. Stopping someone spitting out water, blood, dirt etc from the mouth is simply unenforceable and may not even be advised in many cases. How is a Physio or Doc supposed to clean a players mouth to assess for injury for example? What if s/he has grass or much in his or her mouth? Stopping players who are ill from training... Well a good manager and good medical team with will stop players with respiratory or gastrointestinal illness in any event to maximise their players availability and prevent the spread through the squad. But to stop a player playing in an important game because he/she has a sniffle is completely impractical. Especially in elite amateur sport where athletes are often run down and prone to minor infections. Swapping jerseys- It doesn't happen at club level and the GPA's charter is that county players are allowed keep or swap one jersey per year. Some county boards may allow more. It's a minor risk however The very reason normal life is not continuing during this pandemic is there are risks associated with our day to day activities, including participating in sport, that are either simply not modifiable or not practical to modify. That is why we have had to grind everything to a halt to try and put the breaks on this thing. In normal times those risks are acceptable, right now they are unacceptable and pose a threat to public health. We don't go back to normal until we can go back to normal. So other than sharing water bottles I don't see any of these measures being practical or necessary when we have this under control. And if they are necessary then we probably shouldn't be playing. roundball (Tipperary) - Posts: 2514 - 01/04/2020 12:47:33 2275158 Link 2 |

There may be some permanent effects on culture but I dont think they'll extend to the level you believe. When a danger is overcome most risk goes with it......if people let fear carry on when the risk/danger becomes absolutely minimal it's a charter for allowing OCD take over. I have no doubt the Italians and Spanish will resume hugging each other and kissing each other on the cheeks when all this is over, even though it is probably those kind of practices that have contributed greatly to the high mortality rate that sadly they are experiencing at present.
