Leinster SFC draw 2020: semi-final draw not made yet

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Wasn't there only 14k at the meath vs carlow and Dublin vs Louth double header in portlaoise this year? Remove the meath and carlow fans, add in the waning interest in Dublin gaa as a spectator sport and 11k is fine. A sell out would be good PR.

A lot of people are poo-pooing the Leinster championship. It's true that even if you made Dublin play everyone else, and they had to win all 10 games out of 10 to retain the championship, they'd still stroll to glory. We say similar things about the Munster championship because of Kerry's dominance, and we think the Connacht and Ulster championships are great because there's such a spread of winners.

But ask yourself, why is Leinster so crap and Ulster so good? What's the difference? Answer: nothing, except Dublin are so dominant. That's all. Other than the nuances of the draw and the numbers of teams, the format of the two (all four in fact) competitions is the same. Get rid of Dublin - move them to another province, disband them, whatever - and you get a "competitive" championship; there'd be far less certainty that one particular team would win it, unlike now. And if, say, Donegal started to beat everyone in Ulster by 15+ points and winning 10 Ulsters in a row, we'd be giving out about that championship too, even though the other 8 teams might give each other closer games.

How to improve Leinster? That's down to Louth, Meath, Wicklow, Wexford, Kildare, Carlow, Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Longford. You won't improve the Leinster championship by scrapping it.

Tacaí Liatroma, I agree with you when you say; that the rest of the teams in Leinster and Munster need to improve but it is difficult as they are up against dominant forces that shows no signs of weakening in Dublin and Kerry. If, you had either Dublin or Kerry in Connacht or even Ulster, we would probably be having the same conversation about these provisional championships. Connacht and Ulster are far move competitive championships where one team isn't dominating year after year so a number of teams believe that they have a realistic chance of provisional success each year plus these championship are not foregone conclusion for spectators and viewers alike. I, myself, am not in favour of scrapping the provisional championship, as I think it gives weaker counties a more realistic chance of making a provisional championship final depending on the draw they get. But it seems inevitable that the GAA see the future in terms of a two tier championship with a 'B' championship for the weaker counties and the super 8s for the stronger counties; maybe at a later stage, a champions league format will be introduced. If this type of development was introduced, it would result in the scrapping of all the provisional championships as we know them.

2 brutal teams.

Winner gets to be hammered by Meath.

What is the point."
Hold on there a second. I seen Wicklow play against Kildare this year in Carlow in the first round of the Leinster championship and with a bit of luck, yee could have put us out of our misery early doors. Wicklow have some fine players, I was impressed by the full back, long haired chap, powerful midfielder hanley and there was a guy named at corner forward but he played all over the pitch, lovely footballer with a savage engine on him. Now if we, Kildare were playing meath we'd be confident of beating them so to say that wicklow wouldnt have a chance against them is nonsense. Finally, your new banisiteoir, davy burke is top class and many people in kildare would rather him than Jack o connor. He is a winner with an attention to detail and tactical sense second to none. Ive no doubt, he will bring wicklow to another level. Best of luck to wicklow in 2020

Correct Tacai. It is up to the other counties in Leinster to challenge Dublin. One idea floated by the late Eugene McGee was to scrap the provincial championships, and replace them with 4 groups of 8 on a geographical basis.
It would mean moving counties around to suit the proposed revisions. I am not in favour of the Tier 2 idea, just puts the lesser counties into sporting purgatory, where they labour to reach the heaven of Tier 1.

As long as the other Leinster Councils support them it is a done deal and will be played in Mullingar.

I wonder what Westmeath thought about Laois playing the Dubs in Kilkenny in 2016, or about Carlow playing Dublin in Portlaoise the following year, or about Wicklow playing in Portlaoise again in 2018.....I wonder.

I am not wondering they as well as the rest of leinster took the money, when it came push to shove they opted for the bigger county venues...I hope it is in westmesth...i have a season ticket and if it means i lose out so be it.
