38 In-A-Row

The finals over the past few years have been very close, with Comeragh Rangers closing the gap all the time (they led by 6 points coming up to half-time last Sunday). Ballymac are backboned by a few very strong families (Walls, Ryans, McGraths). They also have Lauren Fitzpatrick, the Tipp keeper, who joined them from Ardfinnan (close neighbours across the border) when that club folded for a while a few years ago.

The LGFA came into existence in 1974. Was there a Waterford club championship from the start? Even if so, there's only 7 years that their championship has been won by any other club team!!!!

The waterford ladies championship actually started in 1971, before the LGFA was formed. No prizes for guessing who won the it that year!
Also Ballymacarbry managed to win the All ireland club 10 times during that 38 in a row.
Ladies football mirrors the mens in Waterford where it is only really played outside of the City area. There's a suprisingly low population, maybe 30-35k, so its not really that crazy that one club with such a big history nationally have managed to dominate.

I still think it is crazy. Impressive yes, but crazy that in 38 years not one other team has managed to win it or even catch them on the hop in any of those 38 years Championships games. Doesn't say a lot about the standard of the other clubs.

I've heard that since this message appeared here on HS that the Kerry county board has sent a delegation up to the Nire on a recognisant mission. They want to bring a few of these ladies back to the kingdom, as they know how to do it. 38-in-a-row beats 5-in-a-row is the new Kerry mantra...(but 5-in-a-row still does beat 4-in-a-row).
