A lot of people have a jaundiced view of the GAA and replays. Some replays look like they are staged or allowed for financial gain for the Association. Also does not having extra time ruin the final day for supporters. I was at the Galway V Kilkenny hurling final a few years ago. It ended in a draw. It was a huge anti climax. Surely the time has come for the GAA to have extra time in both hurling and football finals. This is common practice in Soccer. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2513 - 08/09/2019 14:45:17 2233561 Link 1 |
Im into replays from a purely selfish point of view. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 08/09/2019 15:01:42 2233563 Link 10 |
I would prefer extra time on the day as well, particularly as referees seem far too happy to either blow up a bit early when the teams are level, or give the team a point behind all day to equalize, to ensure a replay and that they receive as little controversy as possible for time keeping or favouring a particular team. eoghan6688 (Galway) - Posts: 154 - 08/09/2019 15:42:57 2233572 Link 0 |
The purpose of the Final is to find the Winner - A draw fails that. So I'd day, finish it on the day. Making extra money for the GAA is a flawed reason for Replay retention. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 08/09/2019 16:52:32 2233582 Link 0 |
There are merits to both. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 08/09/2019 17:07:07 2233585 Link 10 |
Personally I hope this replay next Saturday evening is the last one. It is time to bring in extra time. The final should be decided on the day. How about 10 minutes each half of extra time. I am sure Mayo in particular, or even Galway, would have won more All Ireland's had extra time been played. A replay suits the stronger counties, eg Dubs, Kilkenny and Kerry. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2513 - 08/09/2019 17:33:40 2233588 Link 0 |
you speak as if Galway arent one of the most successful counties... Galway have 3rd most football all irelands and have high number of hurling all irelands as well KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3480 - 08/09/2019 20:01:49 2233635 Link 0 |
Personally I would like to see extra time, its the final, its in the name. The final should be the final game surely? boman11 (Antrim) - Posts: 237 - 09/09/2019 08:58:39 2233731 Link 0 |
drawn match : more goals scored wins? perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 09/09/2019 12:19:10 2233812 Link 0 |
Rubbish idea. A team that scores 2-10 (12 scores) winning against a team that scored 0-16 (16 scores) . waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 09/09/2019 21:46:49 2233978 Link 9 |
yeah?whats wrong with it? increases the value of a goal in theory perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 11/09/2019 09:04:25 2234294 Link 0 |
A goal is already worth 3, if anything it should be the team with more scores rather than goals based on your idea. But still not a great idea boman11 (Antrim) - Posts: 237 - 11/09/2019 09:46:53 2234312 Link 0 |
I like replays for finals but nothing else, its like an extra Christmas suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1662 - 11/09/2019 10:34:03 2234337 Link 0 |
I think in the very early days of the GAA total goals scored would outweigh any number of points by the opposition.

Absolutely true. Which made scoring points a bit of a waste of time. lionofludesch (Down) - Posts: 475 - 11/09/2019 22:15:18 2234602 Link 0 |

There are very valid arguments for both cases..the idea that replays favour the perceived"better team" would be true ..off the top of my head im reminded of a qualifier between cork and limerick in 2010 football championship where cork looked comfortable enough limerick get a run on us and game ends in a draw..now that night in limerick the momentum being with the underdogs going into extra time was nerve wracking and limerick could well have won...if that game went to a replay I'd imagine cork may have won by a margin of 6+ points..so that's one valid case of deciding it on the day no matter what... pidge (Cork) - Posts: 543 - 11/09/2019 22:47:16 2234609 Link 0 |
If teams finish level after nearly 80 mins in an All-Ireland final, they both deserve to share in the glory of the occasion and their performances. Neither team should have to endure the awful emptiness that comes with losing - that is for another day.
