Teams Of The Year/Decade/Century, All Stars

(Oldest Posts First)

This post is nothing against the Admins here who are asking for votes for a HS hurling team of the year. The Admins provide us with an excellent forum to discuss Gaelic Games and try to drive healthy discussion.

What do other people think of these teams of the year/decade? I disagree with them and have no interest in voting for them.

Reasons:
(i) Stronger counties will always get higher representation in teams of the decade because they reach more finals
(ii) Everything seems to be weighted extremely heavily towards the All-Ireland Final
(iii) The methods of selection are inconsistent
(iv) I'd take a lot more notice of Buff Egan's team of the year than anything else given the number of games he goes to
(v) The Sunday Game team of the year is particularly cringe worthy. A group of people in suits discussing who is in & who is out with the usual quips about 'corner back's unions' or 'sure he had to pick a lad from his own county'

It is nice to get an all star award but every year the same thing, supporters think there was an agenda against their county. In my opinion the most valuable award of all is when players vote for their player of the year. Same in any code, soccer, Gaelic Football, Hurling. When your fellow players vote you as the best player of that season/year, it is a prestigious honour to receive. 'Team of the X' just causes arguments.

He didn't name a team of the year yet but this is what he had to say on Twitter about other 'team of the year' efforts:

I would have a few Laois lads on. Kelly by far the Best Wing Back in the Country this Year. That being Said I don't think the The Sunday Game Panel saw too many Laois Games this year. One Maybe at Most

Just in regards to buff egan team..obviously he's some man for going to these matches and I myself enjoy his reports..I wouldn't consider any laois player for team of the year seeing as they played all thier best stuff against weaker sides..that's no disrespect to them or Dublin and while I'm sure the players excelled in those games..it's almost like sticking a player on the club team of the year for playing well in the junior A side against players of similar and weaker calibre..being called up to the senior team and not quite being good enough to play at that standard..laois would need to play in Leinster round robin before even considering one of their players for senior all Ireland team of the year even tho they played 2 games in said competition

Buff is no clown. Appearances can definitely be deceptive and I used to think the same about him. He mightn't have the medals or wear shiny suits from sponsors that some so-called pundits have but he knows his stuff. Can't be many hurling people under 25 that watch The Sunday Game but they love Buff.

I'd agree with GreenandRed

BE is all over the place at hurling games and is bringing the games that media won't show, to the public. JJ Delaney no less recently tweeted that if it wasn't for Buff Egan that people might not have seen much hurling from outside the MacCarthy Cup.

Pidge, Laois played Dublin & Tipperary in this year's MacCarthy cup so maybe their players do warrant recognition?

I wholeheartedly agree with you in that the laois players do warrant recognition..im purely talking about the team of the year aspect of it all..realistically they played two games in Liam McCarthy beating a Dublin side and giving an honest effort vs tipp..in regards Kelly being a half back on team of the year..no way..in that thread I voted for the 3 mahers in the half back line..I would not displace any of them..tipp played and beat everyone in Munster..also laois wexford and Kilkenny..admittedly I only saw laois play a full game in croke park against tipp and have no doubt they played well to get to that stage of the championship.abeit tho against much weaker opposition to make it that far..this is not a swipe at laois whatsoever it's just my view on so called team of the years and in my opinion no laois player should make that team on account of teams they played this year only beating one team in Dublin.

Therein lies the problem with the team of the Year Pidge.

I'd have Diarmuid Byrnes in the half back line. In the NHL game against Tipperary in February he was outstanding, Tipp couldn't get the ball past him. He is an outstanding hurler and had a great 2019.

Back to the original point, 'team of the x' is heavily focused on the All-Ireland and semis. You can have a great year, poor semi final and then you are out of reckoning.

That's not team of the year, it is team of the end of the year.
