Replying To TheFlaker:  "Just having the craic. He called Jack Mac the greatest half back of all time. That's debatable to be honest. I just pointed out Durcan destroyed him and Ryan McHugh.

Jack Mc is unreal but not sure what Kerry were at."
Fair enough but Philly Mc done the same to the Gooch. Doesn't stop him from being a great a player. Complimentary to McCaffrey that someone like Paddy D is told to stick solid to a defender. Mayo's problem was then that there was a couple of forwards and midfielders runnig riot. I just think too much is made of players being marked out a game unless it justifies a win.

Jack is one of the most exciting backs on his day but yeah you could argue for many a player to be called the greatest.

Ah now Durcan got forward too that is the point, he wasn't just ignoring play to man mark. Same v McHugh. Mayo had to do that. Sacrificing Keegan as a full back is bizarre.

We bet mayo by ten points jack didn't need to break a sweat it was a stroll in the park. It's the big games when jack steps up all the time.

The greatest half back to ever play the game.

Teams are putting their best defenders on him to mark him crazy stuff.

He definitely is a serious player , and could become greatest wing back , as attacking he potentially could be greatest attacking half back. I am a massive fan. But I have seen better defensive half backs who were better defensively. He has improved defensively but he was a bit shaky at the start defensively. I think in many ways if lee keegan or Jack McCafffrey were playing 20 years ago they would have been half forwards. Half backs now were half forwards s 20 years ago. There was more room in 40 for half forward with pace 20 years , there was no sweepers blanket defences. So Michael Donnellan Graham Geraghty or Pat Spillane had room to attack. If Michael Donnellan was playing today he would be half back. Say Donnellan or Mcccaffrey today play in half forward line they can be gobbled up by defenders . while if they play in half back line today they have more space to attack and build up speed. And half backs like Sean og De Poar or Paul Curran would be corner backs now. U see very few specialised man markers now likw Sean Marty Lockart anymore. Corner backs now need to able link play and attack so they really are half backs.

In terms of running with the ball with pace three best I have seen were Pat Spillane , Michael Donnellan and Jack McCafffrey . I think Mccaffrey really is an half forward really thats were he would have played 20 years. But he is bringing attacking dimension to wing back we have never seen before and may become greatest half back ever. But there are other contenders , players some I would consider better defenders, but none of them would be a better attacking wing back then Mccaffrey.

1 Sean Murphy was voted half back on team of century and Milleniun. He was first truly great kerry defender. One of greatest kerry footballers ever . He won All Irelands with kerry in 50s.

2 Pauidi O Se. Paudi was a force of nature on the field. He wasnt the fastest but he was a warrior and he was tough tackling brillant old school defender who won 8 All Irelands. If there was a team of Milleniun now today I have feeling Paudi would be number 5 on that team.

3 Martin O Connell. He was the only modern player on team of Milleniun. He won 3 All Irelands and was one of few defenders ever to win footballer of the year. He was brillant footballing playing defender who had it all , a very skilful defender who was a brillant reader of the game . In 1988 he was best footballer in the country giving a man of the match performance in the All Ireland final as good ever seen by number 7 in an All All Ireland final the history of the game.

4 Seamus Moyihan kerry. In my view the greatest defender I ever saw play was Moyihan. Ask kerry supporters how they rate Moyihan and they have him up their with Gouch or Sheedy or Fitzgerald. He would be like one of those great Italiam defenders in soccer. He showed defending was an artform.

5 Tomas O Se Another kerry great wing back . Tomas was a best footballer of the O Se and even better wing back then Paudi. He won footballer of the year and at his peak was best footballer in the country. O Se had it all . The perfect wing back.

6 Jack McCafffrey. The most exciting wing back of them all. The best attacking half back of them all. When he finishes he might be the best.wing back ever.

Others

1 There has been some great Dublins wing backs.
Tommy Drumm. A brillant defender who would walk onto current Dublin. So would Paul Curran , first modern attacking wing back. One of best Dublin footballers ever. Also a great a defender. Eamon Heery also would get on current team. He had pace but one of toughest tackling half backs I ever saw. A tough , great defender. No one got better of Heeery

2 Stephen White was number 7 on team of century. Played senior for louth at 17 in 1940s and 50s . One of the greatest half backs ever to play thr game

3 Tony Davis Cork Excellent wing back he had everything, a class player. Sean Og De Poar Galway another great wing back. He was a brillant attacker but also quality defender. Anthony Rainbow kildare never played a bad game , had a great engine and a great defender. Philip Jordan Very underated player. I never saw him playing bad game. A top class wing back who could attack and defend . Quality number 7. Pat Reynolds senior Meaths first All star , best wing back in Ireland in mid to late 60s. One of the frist all action attacking wing backs. Graham Canty Cork won an All star at wing back..He was class defender in every back position.

Mccaffrey could become the greatest when he finishes the game. We will know then. He is a great player and one of best half backs we have ever seen . But there are candidates also eg Paudi O Se Sean Murphy Tomas O Se or Martin O Connell and others worth mentioning. But Mccaffrey is definatly up with the best of them. A terrific footballer.

From your logic, Phily McMahon Johnny Cooper and Cian O' Sullivan deserve all starts too. Dean Rock had a great game but lets see in replay. Other forwards have done it every game this year.

I think it's getting to the stage where they need to pick one All Star team based on the two finalists and another All Star team based on the rest.

Send the two teams away on a holiday somewhere and let them play an exhibition match.

My non-Dublin-Kerry All Star team would be:

1. Patton - Donegal

2. McMenamin - Donegal
3. McNamee - Tyrone
4. Lavin - Meath

5. Keoghan - Meath
6. Boyle - Mayo
7. Durcan - Mayo

8. O'Shea - Mayo
9. Brennan - Clare

10. M Donnelly - Tyrone
11. Murphy - Donegal
12. McHugh - Donegal

13. Cox - Roscommon
14. McShane - Tyrone
15. McVeety - Cavan

Brilliant post Furlong. Séamus Moynihan started out at right half back and was on a different level entirely to everyone else. He was probably the best footballer in the country from around 1999 to 2004. I'd put him ahead of Tomas O'Se and Jack McCaffery personally as an all rounder. He was good at everything. They even put him in full back when they were badly stuck and he was brilliant there too.

McCaffery is the most dynamic player in football now and very likely POTY again. If David Moran has a monster final and Kerry win he might pip him but it's unlikely

Martin O'Connell was the most modern Gaelic footballer on team of the millennium and had all the skills of the old traditional half back but finished his career as a corner back, winning Texeco Footballer of the year in 1996 as well as four all stars. Moynahan was also a brilliant footballing half back but the modern game sees more attacking from this line. Believe it really started in the early to mid nighties with brilliant talents like Graham Geraghty and Paul Curran. McCaffrey is unbelievable but very hard to compare as the game has completely changed with less man to man contests.

Moynihan is one of my favourite players of the last 25 years. As you said, he pretty much had it all. A fantastic footballer, but also very physical when needed. He was the type of player who just got on with it and carried himself very well on and off the pitch.

McCaffrey had a great game last Sunday , but he was very poor when up against Paddy Durcan in the Semi, in fact Durcan was the outstanding player of the Championship, have got the better of Shane Walsh and Ryan McHugh and McCaffery , surely Durcan is in for POTY

Mayo's poor year will count against him and the fact he missed a few games (I think) but you are right he destroyed McCaffery in the semi and chipped in a few scores himself in an excellent performance

Along with all of his teammates. Durcan was one of the few to stand up in that second half iirc but I was only watching on the telly so perhaps those at the game saw things I didn't
