Likely Football Allstars 2019...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

1. Cluxton
2. Fitzsimons
3. McNamee
4. Keogan
5. McHugh
6. Durcan
7. McCaffrey
8. Fenton
9. Moran
10. Kilkenny
11. O'Shea
12. Howard
13. Clifford
14. O'Callaghan
15. Mannion

I hate to drop Murphy as he had a great year but competition in the forwards this year is insane. Kilkenny has to get in there now, especially on the back of that performance. That was easily one of the best performances by any player in an All Ireland final.

the all-stars are always likely to start rows. it's totally subjective in a lot of ways (or in all ways) I can't argue much with probably 12 of the positions from the Sunday game. however Clifford for me has to start!!!! end off..... Durcan had a good year in the super 8's and even in the semi against Dublin but in my own opinion, I thought Ryan mc Hugh was class and is harshly being cut from the team ironically after a bad day on Durcan (when apparently he was sick on the run-up to the game!!!) but if any Donegal lad deserved an all-star for me it would be Mc Menamon (I'd put him into that full backline ahead of any of the other 3 choices hands down!!!) he has been the best defender in ulster this year, marked Clifford out of it and was the shining light against Mayo after Donegal lost 3 defenders to injury.
..................and of course, cian Mackey should be in

Replying To plike:  "He did well with that save BUT the lead up was slow and laboured. Where they did well on Saturday was in dragging down a Kerry player who almost certainly would have scored when they were within milliseconds of doing so. As with the rooting and tearing by backs to put players kicking long range points off their stroke, it seems that the GAA is as wedded to its Wild Wild West instincts as it ever was!"
Come on. Players foul guys who are about to shoot. Happens every game. Not sure why that should take anything away from Cluxton. A POTY should be for consistent excellent peformances. He did this. He made top saves throughout the championships combined with the usual hight standard of kick outs.

I do think places in the backline are more up for grabs. The forward line is a nightmare to pick. While I agree that MeMenamin is one of the top defenders in Ulster and I think he'll get nominated I don't think he will get the nod for the All Star. I think Donegal will get one all star on the basis that they had some very good individual performers and as a team they only lost one game in championship while teams like Mayo and Tyrone lost three. Donegal also put in strong displays against Kerry and Tyrone. From a Donegal point of view our best and most consistent performer was Michael Murphy and I still think he will get his all star this year. I thought he was nailed on before the two games between Kerry and Dublin but now I realise there are so many options in the forwards so there is a chance he could miss out. David Moran's performance in the drawn match outs him in and a number of other forwards have put their hand up for selection. Stephen O'Brien is the only forward that has damaged his chances and could be the unlucky one to miss out.

My team:

1. Cluxton (POTY)
2. Fitzsimons
3. Morley
4. O'Sullivan
5. McCaffrey
6. Durcan
7. Howard (Can play 5 to 12)
8. Fenton
9. Moran
10. Murphy
11. O'Shea (YPOY)
12. Mannion
13. Clifford
14. McShane
15. O'Callaghan

I'm finding it hard leaving Kilkenny out and I think Clifford could miss out which means I could include Kilkenny at 12 and Mannion at 13. They might then decide to give YPOTY to Clifford to work around it. Clifford had average enough games v Dublin (drawn match), Tyrone and Donegal so that might count against him.

this is where it's subjective, in all fairness you could pick probably 2 or even 3 teams and one would be as good as the other!!! overall the quality this year has been very good IMO!!!

I like your pick with one exception. Having seen McHugh played off the pitch by a Fermanagh teenager and then struggling against Durcan, I don't think he deserves a place. I would have McNamee at corner back and Durcan at wing back. Totally subjective of course

It's the players who vote for young POTY so the journalists can't decide based on who won an all star. Looks a straight choice between O'Shea and Clifford anyway.

Well is it not logical that this is the case since Meath people see Keoghan play more than others. Meath have not been televised as much as other counties but any real football people in the country understand Keoghan is one of the top defenders in the country regardless of an all star award. Remember Kilkenny was taken off early in 2nd half against Meath. Keoghan stood out even on very much an off day for the team.

For the last time, Keoghan is not getting an All Star. There's 6 backs, Dublin and Kerry are getting 5 of those and Mayo are getting one. He's going to get nominated and no more. If Meath had made it out of their group instead of getting no points, he was in with a great chance. Even if Meath had a final game in S8 that anyone cared about, maybe. But none of those things happened. Only one player got an All Star from a team that didn't get to a semi final and that was Ryan McHugh and his team won Ulster.

What he has done in this decade for Dublin and the GAA in general is nothing short of amazing."
He prob deserves a poty in fairness...... but the gooch has never got one either so I wouldn't worry too much about it. MDM got one and he cant solo the ball and is basically told by management not to kick it, so it's a dubious enough award to be getting.

Listen. No Meath player is going to get an all star.

You are a poor team who are horrible to watch. You got destroyed in your provincial final and got no points in the super 8's.

Please give over with this ridiculous argument.

Yeah I could never understand that one. It was basically awarding really hard work, honesty and effort. All laudable traits granted. But i think we should expect more to deserve "Footballer" of the year.

Michael Murphy is a brilliant footballer but does not deserve to be in ahead of Clifford, O Brien or even Kilkenny. O' Brien was in the running for POTY even after the semi final just unfortunate that the final went to a replay and he wasnt effective seems to have cost him an all star in many peoples eyes

O'Brien wasn't great the first day out either. He was arguably Kerry's most effective player up to that point though. I do think he deserves one.
I think McShane will get one, as will Con and Mannion, so somebody is going to be squeezed into the half-forward line, if Clifford is also selected.

After the replay i have changed my mind on a couple of players.

1. Cluxton
2.Mick Fitzsimons
3. Tadgh Morley - Davey Byrne solid all year
4. Tom O'sullivan
5. Paddy Durcan
6. Gavin Crowley - Boyle maybe still on the fence
7. Jack Mccaffrey
8. Brian Fenton
9. David Moran.
10. Brian Howard
11. Sean O'Shea
12.Stephen O'Brien - Ciaran Kilkenny
13. Paul Mannion
14. Cathal Mcshane
15. Con o'Callaghan

I also think they are going to try get clifford in so they may out howard wing back and crowley will come out with paul mannion going to the wing

The bulk will be Dublin and Kerry.

Ulster champions and Connaught champions did not make it out of super 8s so we can expect little in return.

Back door teams might get a couple, then again might not.

Between the dubs and Kerry I would expect 13.
2 token nominations from either Ross, Donegal, Tyrone, Mayo.

I would have no complaints about it if it were this way.
