Is Now The Time For Mickey Harte To Step Down?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Sean Cavanagh appears to think it is time for a new manager with a new approach.

I know Mickey has another year left on his current contract but is now a better time to step aside?

I think he should but will be surprised if he does. I would say he would want to go out with at least an Ulster so would expect him to see out his contract.

Management Team

Not another Mickey must go post but just a few fact

Looks like cracks are starting to show in the support for Mickey with Sean Cavanagh advocating a change on the Sunday game.

Given that we have beat a "top 4" side since 2008 I would be in agreement.

The question now has to be asked why so many of our best players from club football are walking away from the team,

Also when we needed to change things yesterday our sideline didn't act quick enough or seemingly at all and not for the 1st time,

I don't want to put the boot in but with Peter Donnelly moving on I think this could be a good time to give someone new a change to work with the young talent we have on the squad and coming in over the next few years

Mickey should have went years ago. He won't go at all. He went back to his defensive system play during the year to guarantee that he would get to an all ireland semi final and secure his seat again.
Time to give some of the other brilliant coaches in Tyrone a chance to manage their county team.

From talking to a few of my Tyrone friends, there seems to be a perception that Mickey favours certain clubs and their players and that there are a number of players who should be making the team / squad who are being overlooked. If this is a fair statement, then I don't see how his position is tenable as his remit is to gather the best squad available to him to put on the filed of play. It may not be the case and could be a false perception from east Tyrone but I would find it a concern if this is happening.

I can understand the argument that other Tyrone coaches should have an opportunity to manage their county. However as a non Tyrone supporter I wouldn't mind him stepping down. He is the single reason why Tyrone are competitive, I predict very hard years ahead for the county when he steps aside. Average players and average manager don't mix well, ask Meath posters about the years spent outside Div 1.

Granted....but he remains as far away from winning sam in the future as ever.

Fresh perspective is no harm.

The man owes Tyrone nothing but it might be hard for him to see the wood for trees ......the fact is gaa has been a huge comfortand distraction for him on a personal level with the amazing grief he has had to endure .his a gael to the bones
I think Tyrone need a new voice and direction and this point in time though

Every time Tyrone suffer a defeat we hear these calls for Mickey to resign. I thought Tyrone played well for most of the game yesterday, up until the 50th minute they were much the better team, it would be harsh on Mickey if this was his last game. My work takes me to Tyrone quite a lot and there is a definite split between supporters, probably 50/50. Some think Mickey is the right man and should have the job as long as he likes, others just want a fresh face. His fans will say he is getting the most out of an average bunch of players, personally I feel this is harsh on the players as Tyrone have some great footballers.

One issue I would have is that so many good forwards just don't seem to get a chance. Lee Brennan, Ronan O'Neill, Darren McCurry & Kyle Coney have either left the squad or got little game time. Granted Mark Bradley wasn't available this year. Would one of those above mentioned players not have made a perfect foil for Cathal McShane? Where has David Mulgrew gone, another fantastic forward.

It's a really difficult one to know what is the right decision but I just can't see Mickey resigning and it would split the county if they removed him. He probably does deserve another year at it.

I don't agree we have an AI u21winning management team there that should get a chance

Also we need to have the best players in the county on the panel lads like Lee Brennan and Shea McGuigan and others that are on panel need more game time as when things are going bad we turn to the same players who are just no capable of changing the game in our favour

If Mickey Harte does step down who is his most likely successor?

I don't know anything about Tyrone club football so couldn't comment on players not on the panel, players drop out for different reasons as it's an amateur sport at the end of the day. Yes there is an U21 winning management team there who I'd imagine is next in line. There is many great club and underage managers around the country who got an opportunity to manage a senior county team but don't always be successful. David Moran called minor football a different sport yesterday and I'd say the same about U21.

It's Tyrone's call and good luck to them but MH goes down as one of the greatest managers of all time - you won't just replace someone that good overnight - Meath is a textbook of the current Tyrone situation, when the players dried up in Meath the call was replace the manager and they'll be fine. We all seen how that ended up, looking from the outside I think in a few years Tyrone people will be talking about the "Harte years" and only realising then how good they had it.

Changing manager might not work but we need to try something different,

It is funny how all the players who have left the panel are all forwards.

Just because Meath had trouble since Boylan left doesn't mean the same will happen in Tyrone.

Would Malachy O'Rourke be the favourite for the job if Mickey did leave, even though he's from Fermanagh?

There could be a generation of good managers missing out because of one mans presence.

He was a great manager but give someone else a go

He should go for sure, for a number of "reasons", but he won't and from an Ulster championship perspective I kind of hope he stays. Granted he's beaten Monaghan in many big Croker games in recent times but they are still stuck in that defensive straight jacket .... which gives teams a chance. Had they played the more attacking system yesterday they tried out earlier this year ... they would have beaten Kerry. Lee Brennan is at home. So is Ronan O'Neill. Two of the best forwards in the country. Suits the opposition nicely.

Plus if you look at their support .... it's a fraction of what they used to get. As other posters have alluded to, that's due to the 50/50 split. Tyrone v Kerry in the 2003 semi was a sea of red and white. And the whole of Ulster was supporting them (with the exception of Armagh). From my reckoning, you'd have had 80% of Ulster GAA supporters supporting Kerry yesterday ... both for the sake of a decent final and more so cos of some the the dark arts introduced by Tyrone (at all grades) since the the All Ireland team disbanded.

The last Tyrone GAA official to stand up to Harte was the former chairperson .... and she is now exactly that ... former. Can't see Logan, Dooher or clubmate Canavan putting their hands up for it ..... despite what Cavanagh might wish for. Would love to be at the All Ireland reunion in a few years to see the Harte Cavanagh embrace / bearhug ....

11 years since an All-Ireland win and they won't win another under Mickey. Think it's time for a change. I'd love to see him managing the Antrim footballers.
