Joe Canning expressed eloquently how most Galway supporters felt about winning that All Ireland, that there was a tinge of sadness there since we had defeated a team that had waited longer than ourselves.

More games definitely helps. I guess "Points Per Game" might be a more accurate snapshot of this topic.

I think with the current format we are likely to see more variety in the winners. Between 96 and 2001 just as the back door came in we had 6 different counties winning the final. If KK win 2019 then we will have 4 different winners in the last 4 years. Doing back to back in this new system will be incredibly difficult with the number of games teams have to play. Interesting stat, if Tipp win Sunday week, with the exception of Brian Cody who has won 11 All Irelands as manager, Liam Sheedy will be the first manager to win 2 All Irelands since Ger Loughnane with Clare in 1997. He will also be the first manager to beat Brian Cody is back to back championship games. Incredible stat after 20 years. Faithfull (Offaly) - Posts: 573 - 07/08/2019 12:49:18 2222149 Link 1 |
Agree pretty much with what Faithfull wrote above. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 07/08/2019 13:15:47 2222155 Link 1 |
GOLDEN AGE!!!!What does this over used phrase mean ??? Yes it's been a more widely competitive few years but as far as I remember in my lifetime the mid 90s to mid noughties it was brilliant 15 men vs 15 men man on man hell for leather no inch given or taken ....the compulsory helmet rule has definitely taken away from the game the passion on the faces the easy identification it was just way better safety trumps all yes but at a cost Hitnhurl (Cork) - Posts: 92 - 07/08/2019 14:47:19 2222208 Link 0 |
I was ecstatic for Galway but yes felt bad for Waterford. I know exactly what Canning meant.

I could not envy Galway. The respect for one of the most graceful hurler ever to play the game John Connolly. His brothers, P.J.Qualter, P.J. Molloy, Joe Mc, Peter Finnerty, Sean Silke the bold Sylvia and the list goes on and on. What is sad for me is the amount of great players in many counties who never reach the summit. Our 2017 team were not the greatest. When you look at the one before it. Mullane , Flynn, Dan, Ken, Pendergast, Kelly, Molumphy, Brown and Hartley. More than half of the team were stars and a supporting cast that were decent as well. Could not win with that line up makes you wonder if it will ever happen.

Not forgetting the stylish great No 7 Iggy Clarke for Galway in the 70's & 80's! Waterford had fine teams in '98 and '07 lovely individual hurlers.

Those Waterford players that you mention were wonderful hurlers, skillful, passionate and very exciting to watch, it's an awful shame they didn't win an All Ireland. I remember Ken and Brown esp as real heroes and wonderful sportsmen. There were some great Galway players who never won an All Ireland, Ollie Canning probably the most stylish and best hurler of them all, and we had the tragic loss of the wonderful Niall Donoghue. Waterford will have good days again Canuck. It will probably take a few years but the hurlers will come and hopefully win an All Ireland in the next decade. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1791 - 07/08/2019 22:48:34 2222502 Link 0 |
It will happen sooner or later. Too many good Hurlers in Waterford for it not to happen.

Yes so many great players in Galway who did not win All Irelands. Joe Salmon, Jimmy Duggan come to mind from way back and men like Eugene Cloonan, Kevin Broderick and who was the wing back that won MOM in the '93 Final, a really classy player. But of course great players from many different counties did not win All Irelands either.

Indeed from all hurling counties, including the traditional ones. But when it comes to teams, outside of the big three, Waterford, Galway and Limerick spring to mind, of great teams who came very close but failed to win the All Ireland.

Padraig Kelly was that man, 1993 wing back.

I always felt bad for Sean Stack of Clare, John Mullane of Waterford, etc. Of today's players I wonder if Patrick Horgan will ever get one.

Tony Browne from Waterford. Hurled with them until he was 40 years old and never won one.

Kelly was a serious hurler, a class bit of stuff. Scored a cracking point that day too.

Passionate about Waterford hurling but in my opinion we are never physical enough. Then do stupid things out of frustration like pulling wild and getting sent off. Don't believe for one second that especially Kilkenny (others also) feast on our timidness. We were bullied by strong teams this year. Look at the league (useless competition) this year our skillful players ran huge scores up on the 1B teams. Where was that when we had to match up to the big boys? don't forget fine Clare teams in the 50s,60,70s and 8s. They never seemed to get a lucky break, but still had the most brilliant supporters and then we had '95 and '97. Almost as good as '73 and'18. Well not quite but close.
