Cork Hurling

(Oldest Posts First)

Was watching the u20 semi-final today by chance. I must say, Cork have serious players coming through. No 12, Tommy something, is a serious player. No. 8 too. The scoreline didn't reflect the hiding they gave Kilkenny. But this has been a problem in Cork for a while, transitioning the talent to senior. Kk have Cody to do it, Cork often flatter to deceive despite the talent. The "big 3" dominance goes in cycles, surely it's Cork's turn again?

I do think Cork will break that psychological barrier in Croke Park, and when they do, they'll dominate for a while. The talent coming out of the county is ridiculous at the moment. Made KK look like amatuers. The hurling culture in Cork is just aesthetically better than Tipp and KK, smooth natural hurling at it's finest

Good afternoon for Cork yesterday. Their hurlers and footballers really upset the odds yesterday.

Aesthetics will win you the sum total of F-All, unfortunately.

I feel your frustration. Galway went through it for years despite having lots of talent at all levels. It's mind boggling how it doesn't translate to Seniors.

While the likes of Tyrone *football* kk hurling dublin kerry began the utilization of development squads cork sat back under the regiem of an antiquitied county board that just assumed that just like every year previous cork would just produce hurlers overnight and all will be fine result a decade if famine
Eventually with the views of some forward thinking cork gaels finally taken on board u14 upwards development squads were set up and now we are beginning to see the fruits of the labour even the city clubs are producing again I believe with the spread of the county the amount of clubs and coaches and now new facilities avaible the sleeping beast is due to awaken very soon at senior level and id say going to dominate for quite some time

All Kilkenny teams are amatuers.

Will it still be 'aesthetically better' if Dónal Og gets the job?

I wouldn't say Cody is overly concerned if Kilkenny win minor and under-20 All Irelands. "Nice to have" obviously, but Cody's teams throughout his reign have been full of players who never won anything at minor or under-21. Many of them were never even considered "stars" at minor or under-21. Hell, in a few instances, some never even hurled for Kilkenny underage. He's not remotely in awe of or impressed by players with big underage reputations, they have to prove themselves on the senior panel. Some do and some don't.

On the Kilkenny under-20 team yesterday, they were comfortably beaten by a good Cork team. I thought we did ok in the first half, hadn't hurled brilliantly but were only a point down even after conceding a soft goal. Selector Liam Smith spoke bullishly at half time about how Kilkenny were going to go for it in the second half and I thought they'd up their game, but the opposite happened, it was Cork who upped their game and started winning their contests all over the field. The subs DJ threw on were a disaster, all they did from what I could see was give away frees and possession.

Adrian Mullen disappointed but probably too much was expected of him because of his exploits on the senior team. David Blanchfield, Eoin Cody, Evan Shefflin and Niall Brassil looked like players who might have potential to make it senior.

It could be worse, Wexford shipped 8 goals v Tipp today.

No, it'll be aesthetically worse. Anyway he won't get the job.

Adrian Mullen's uncle's funeral was 3 hours before the game so very unfair to judge him on that basis

I wouldn't think the aesthetics would improve !

From a Cork perspective who do you think will get it? And who would you prefer?

I'm surprised given his history with the County Board that Dónal would even apply but maybe that's a narrow outsiders view.

I totally forgot about that, no disrespect intended to the young man who's been outstanding this year.

I'm afraid it's actually Tipps turn if you're talking bout cycles of the big 3.
If Cork are to win anything ever again it wont be with just aethestics. Until that penny drops they are just a fine side with a very soft underbelly.
