AI Semi-Final Referees Should Be Neutral

(Oldest Posts First)

Sean Cleere should not have being the ref for the Tipp v Wexford game yesterday. The reasoning being Kk were in the other semi-final. Referees should be neutral ie. Reffs should only be appointed when their own county isn't involved in the other semi-final.

GAA needs top referees like Barry Kelly and James McGrath.

Sean Cleere was appointed BEFORE Kilkenny had qualified for the final but whoever makes these appointments should have allowed for the possibility that KK would beat Limerick. I believe the last time a referee took charge of a semi-final when his own county was already in the final was 1976, so that would suggest that the GAA have some sort of policy on this issue. Why then did they deviate from the norm on this occasion? A referee for an All-Ireland semi-final is under enough pressure in normal circumstances and, while not making excuses for some of Sean Cleere's decisions yesterday, he did look nervous and under severe pressure from the outset. Whoever appointed him did him no favours.

Don't know anything about other threads. It's still a valid point.

The thread "Referee for Wexford v Tipperary" covers this entirely.

Totally agree! and as the commentators said on the day, its less about potential bias and more about the perception of bias. i.e. if the referee is never in that situation then none of his calls (whether malicious or not) can be scrutinized therefore preventing conflicted referees from officiating games protects the both the referee and the fairness of the game!

If you are referring to refs living in Dublin refereeing big Dublin games you have a very good point. This is outrageous and should not happen. I do not know why counties like Kerry and Dublin have not protested about this, or maybe they have to no avail.
Can you just imagine the outrage if a Galway referee living in Castlebar was appointed to referee an AIF between Dublin and Mayo!!
