Is David Clifford The Best Footballer In The Country Right Now?

Maybe I'm being biased but for me Connolly is the most naturally gifted player i have ever seen. Not saying hes the most consistent, and of course hes not playing much lately. But in terms of raw natural ability hes the best ever.... IMO."
Mattie Forde was better than Connolly....Clifford is special. IMO he's the best player playing the game at the moment and has the potential and raw ability to get even better which is scary

I don't get all this talk about players being "naturally gifted" Anytime I ever heard that I always took it as being another way of saying that the player concerned was a bit lacking in the more manly qualities needed to be a true great.

This thread is asking about who is the best player in Ireland. As I argued earlier I think it is a silly question as comparing goalkeepers defenders, midfielders & forwards is futile.

One thing I do know however, is that natural ability on it's own is not enough to make the grade.

It's a difficult debate i personally think Michael Murphy is the best all round player in the country. You could argue that Clifford is the best inside forward the boy is only 20 so he may become the best. Murphy has everything Clifford is still raw but very exciting to watch

No, Jack McCaffrey.

Maurice Fitzgerald was a similar type player and was better than Connolly imo, although both are incredible talents."
all a matter of opinion but id agree, Maurice would be up there for me.

3 of the most naturally gifted footballers I've seen would be

Dermot Connolly
Ciaran McDonald
Maurice Fitzgerald"]All great footballers, but surely gooch?

few arguments about him being the best prospect. Maybe let some of the older guys have a bit of glory first.

He is one of the few that would star on a top team ,and could drag a bad team into contention

I've already made my opinion known, but at David Clifford's age, Michael Murphy had already been top scorer in the Championship in 2009 (outscoring Colm Cooper), and also won the Young Footballer of the Year award the same year.

Club-wise he was the driving force on the pitch that cemented Glenswilly as a senior club. Glenswilly were Division 4 in the 1990s, Division 3 in the early 2000s, and in Murphy's second year for the seniors (aged 17) they won Division 2 and got to the Senior Championship final. The impact that he has had on club and county is surreal, and I would be confident that without him Donegal and Glenswilly would never have won All-Ireland, Ulster, or Donegal Senior Championships.

He won it all by 23, as star and captain, and I think he's even better now than he was back then.

When Clifford upstages peak Murphy in Croke Park, or when he wins the All-Ireland, and Kerry Championship, THEN I believe we can have this chat.

Con.

Unreal again. Directly involved in 13pts in 2nd half and left Keegan for dead for his class as feck goals

No doubting he will be one of the leading players in the game for a long time to come. He has turned in to a beast of a man as well.

I'd say Mannion is the best player currently.

Fenton over the last 3-4 years has been the best player overall. He's done it in a number of the biggest games too.

God I couldn't agree. He's been held reasonably well most days, like Mullinaghta and today.

Fenton, O'Callaghan and Clifford are 3. Jack McCaffrey, Michael Murphy close enough.

Michael Murphy without doubt.
Captain, penalties, frees, forward, midfielder, defender for 10+ years.
Brilliant off the pitch with media and public.
The complete all rounder.

I don't think I ever recall Keegan getting so easily beaten for scores as he did for those two goals. My dad kept shaking his head saying "he isn't a full back". If he was playing inter county hurling he'd be up there too.

I'd still probably put Fenton above any other Dublin player at the minute.

Personally Maurice Fitz was the best I ever saw
Clifford is potentially better
His skill and talent is astonishing
Fitz arrived in 88. There was no back door then. We missed him at his peak

Fenton and con were a different class yesterday but I think Clifford shades both of them overall.

I know he has already announced his arrival but I expect him to go into a different stratosphere today and then the conversation about POTY will get interesting! He just seems remarkable and its days like today when the cream really rises to the top.

What a beast. He was exceptional yesterday and yeah I would agree he definitely has to be considered, made a boy out of Keegan, who on his day has had very successful games marking Connolly too.
