Laois Have Put The Mcdonagh Cup On The Hurling Map

(Oldest Posts First)

Congratulations to Laois! As a supporter of a lower tier hurling county, it great to see one of our own get such a magnificent preliminary quarter-final victory.

All McDonagh counties going forward can dream of emulating this Laois team of 2019.

Let me also congratulate Laois hurlers on a magnificent win today. Second time in a week to acknowledge our neighbours, but well deserved.
Laois did set down a marker today, for all those counties deemed unworthy to dine at the top table by the higher ups in the GAA. It wasn't easy for Laois, playing just a week after winning the McDonagh Cup, it was reckoned Dublin would advance after a brave display by the McDonagh Cup holders, it did not happen that way. Tipperary are up next, regardless of that result Laois have served notice they won't be a push over next year in league and championship.
Eddie Brennan has done a terrific job with Laois hurlers, who for many years were destined forever to walk in the shade, today they earned their place in the sun.

I am not surprised by it. I think a few Laois people were quietly confident. Their opponents today would be feared by them as they might Wexford, Kilkenny or Galway. It was the perfect storm to cause an upset, create history and put the McDonagh Cup firmly on the hurling map.

Delighted for them and especially for Cheddar Plunkett, he talks a lot of sense every week on the GAA Hour and unlike Brian Carroll doesn't play the poor mouth.
For me the bigger question is if Laois can do that with a fraction of the finance of Dublin, how good can they be with proper funding and structures in the county? The case for that cannot be ignored any longer.

Brought great fanfare to the Mcdonagh final and again today. I imagine next week will be even bigger. Hopefully the GAA really get behind Laois now with funding because you don't want Laois to be good for a few years then fall back again. Invest in Laois and make assist them in being a good team in 10, 15 and 20 years.

Tier system works, the sooner it is introduced to football the better. But for hurling these structures are evolving and hopefully they tweeked to help counties like Laois and Carlow. Unfortunately both counties operating from a small pool which makes Laois's heroics all the more impressive.
