Laois Into AIQF Shock Of The Century?

Replying To ballydalane:  "Westmeath also beat Dublin quite recently too. I'd say within the last decade Dublin have beaten Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford and Limerick in championship hurling but have lost to Antrim, Westmeath and now Laois. Shocking inconsistency."
When exactly did dublin beat limerick in the championship in last decade?

2011. All-Ireland quarter final in Thurles.

Won by 4/5 iirc.

Replying To ballydalane:  "Antrim beat Dublin in Croke Park when Anthony Daly was over the Dubs and they were supposedly a team on the up. That was a shock result of equal proportion to today. I can never really trust a Dublin hurling team no matter how built up they might be, I feel there's always a clanger in them."
You can never trust the Dublin Hurlers.

Replying To Viking66:  "Laois just beat Dublin by 2 points! Fair play to them!! But is it really the shock of the century? Im not so sure! Definitely adds weight to the argument for a 6 team Leinster Championship though!"
While I don't comment on every game prediction as it would be impossible, I did genuinely think Laois had a decent chance of beating Dublin here...following the JMCD cup, they were most impressive, running up high tallies against all teams, while they are viewed as operating at a level below the big guns, wins are wins and good performances breed confidence, and one has to hand to all involved here, Eddie Brennan has them flying and I am delighted for Laois hurling..we had them competitive during the early to mid 1980's and they certainly caused a few upsets particularly during the NHL in those times, not forgetting beating Wexford to reach 1985 Leinster final, and reach the centenary cup hurling final in 1984..I like Dublin hurlers, they are not at the heights they have been previously, but are still a formidable side, so one has to hand it to Laois, but it is not a huge shock (if it was a few years ago, yes definitely but not now)....people are already writing them off against Tipp next week, might be a bridge too far for them but they certainly wont fear going into the battle, that's for sure..wishing them all the best.

Dublin beat Limerick 3-13 to 0-18 in the 2011 All Ireland quarter final in Thurles. Ryan O'Dwyer did the damage scoring 3-3 for the Dubs. Dublin also knocked us out in 2015 in Thurles by 1-17 to 1-16.

Limerick beat Dublin 2-18 to 1-17 in the 2009 quarter final. Gavin O'Mahony scored a couple of brilliant sideline cuts in the second half to nudge us over the line.

Funny for that to be your first post on the message board!!

A bit of a forgetful Limerick fan if you can't remember as far back as 2011!!

Replying To StoreysTash:  "Bigger upsets off the top of my head :
1. Mount Leinster Rangers beating Oulart a few years ago
2. Wexford beating Kilkenny in 2004 (KK going for 3-in-a-row)"
Don't think mount leinster beating oulart was such a huge shock as they had already beaten ballyboden.

Wexford beating Kilkenny was a shock but it was always possible.

The Leix win is different as it's a hurling county beating a higher level one.

It rarely happens. Antrim beating Dublin was comparable.

It's great as it gives hope to Westmeath, Carlow , Kerry etc as they try to break into the 10 county cost cartel.

Westmeath bearing Kilkenny in the under 21 in 2016 was surely bigger.

I would rank Antrim beating Offaly in 1989 above it too.

Laois came into the game as the unbeaten Joe McDonagh Cup winners. They had a decent league campaign too. As Ballydalane said, Dublin seem to have a clanger in them too.

That wasn't a shock, I was there and Dalyo took off about five first team players with 15 minutes to go and I think Antrim were 8 points down. It was a managerial mistake where as Laois outplayed Dublin. Biggest problem with Dublin is they can't hand pass to another player it's all over the place.

The fact that Dublin took Galway out before this makes it a huge shock.

Would be one thing if Dublin were having a terrible year

Agreed.

The frustration that day wasn't because we'd lost to Antrim but more the manner at how we had lost the game.

Waterford beating Cork in 89 was probably a shock given they went onto win the AI following year.

Dublin reminded me of Offaly losing in 89 to Antrim and 91 to Dublin themselves after winning the league beating Tipp along the way who won the AI.

That's the beauty of hurling and when the game is deprived of 15 v 15 and you play sweepers and a tactical game it's amazing how the small teams can mix it up once their core skill set is perfect.

Laois always had good hurlers but getting 15 lads to play together was always an issue a bit like Antrim I guess.

Offaly take note look what can happen when you have a committed bunch of lads.

Wow! I can only assume you haven't yet reached your teenage years or unlikely I know but maybe only started following hurling in the past 10 months...

wildpundit - what was curious about Waterford in 89 was they beat Cork after a replay. Very rarely the underdogs do it on the second day. The scoring the first day was tame enough 0-18 apiece but the second day was massive, 5-16 to 4-17. At half time Cork were ahead something like 3-11 to 2-10. Those scores might seem average now but back then a game with 9 goals and 33 points was somewhat abnormal.

Hardly the shock of the century, a surprise result alright.

It probably is the shock of the century in the AISHC. What result since 2000 was more surprising?
