Donegal V Cavan. Ulster Final. 2019-

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Delighted we are meeting Cavan in the final and if we don't win then no better county to lose it too.
I'm not getting carried away with our win on Saturday for the reason that Tyrone were truly awful by their standards. Had we beat a Tyrone team at full pelt then I'd be very confident going into the final but the way Tyrone played then Cavan will be a big step up. Most of the Cavan team have had Ulster success against Donegal and won't be fazed by the opposition. Graham is obviously a good manager and Cavan played a higher level of league football than us this year.
Another poster mentioned our 2013 final and Cavan will be as ravenous for success as Monaghan were that day. If we're not at it then Cavan will make us pay and won't let up until that final whistle.
Hoping for a good game and don't think we'll be as defensive as the Tyrone game and hopefully it will be a good entertaining game with us doing the back to back!!

Was hoping someone out there might be able to help me.

I'm trying to find the two teams and subs for the 1983 Ulster final between these two teams.

I've searched high and low and can't find them anywhere. Cheers in advance if ye can help at all.

You could reach out to Donegal Sport Hub on Twitter. They usually write articles such as these looking back at previous encounters and I'm imagine given the novel final pairing this year they'll definitely be casting a look back at that 83 final.

I think my Dad has the Sunday Game highlights recorded on video, and then transferred to DVD somewhere. I'll ask him.

Replying To Hardtimes:  "Remember leaving Clones after the semi in 2013 deflated but slightly relieved we didn't have to face the AI champions in the final. Fully expected Monaghan to not keep it kicked out. Was at the final and the intensity Monaghan brought was off the scale. Donegal couldn't get going and were wiped off the field. Was a shock to me anyway. There's always a chance. There'll be a tendency for us to talk ourselves down going into this which is natural but there's a bit of an attitude about this Cavan team that has been missing for a while. I'll remain pessimistic but doubt the players will and really hope Mickey comes up with a master stroke for the final. But to win I think we need goals."
I too recall leaving Clones and saying to Cavan fans that a pick if both sides would struggle v the AI champions, and as you rightly say, what a shock lay in store.

My general point is that Cavan have been threatening for a while now. Squeaks v Monaghan in close fought derbies aside, last year's Tyrone v Cavan qualifier was close deep into the second half. Cavan rattled the red hands, and with a bit more luck/belief a result was not beyond them.

So whilst our own quarter final loss was disappointing it was not a surpise. It's actually refreshing to see such an expansive game as tbe semi fibal replay, and I for one wish our rivals from across the ditch the best.

An adult in the Pat McGrane stand for the final is €35. Ridiculous.

Christ Adge King even at 11 I could tell he was no footballer, and our over reliance on Derek McDonnell was a real problem. Jim Reilly, Joe Dillon and Ray Cullivan were great players though. As for gangly Micheal Faulkner my abiding memory of him was a wet match somewhere and as he hit the ground for the umpteenth time some oul lad behind me shouted "Jesus Faulkner you're like a drunken daddy long legs!". Happy memories all the same.

A novel enough pairing in recent times, Donegal will need to have a serious off day to lose this.

First half was decent, second not so much. Martin McHugh was some baller.

That 1983 Ulster final was only the second match I had ever gone to as a young lad. I can still remember old lads in tears when Donegal beat Cavan that day. It was only our 3rd ever Ulster win and the raw passion was sonething I will never forget. I was hooked ever since.

Same here. Second game too. I don't really remember it though. I was 6. I remember Galway in Croke Park. First time I ever heard my Dad swear, when Val Daly stole the game for Galway at the end. Took a while for us to get back to Croke Park after that

It's hard to believe that by the time Donegal won their first Senior Ulster title in 1972,Cavan had already amassed 36 senior Ulster titles.Cavan were the absolute kingpins of Ulster football for so long and were totally dominant in the 20s,30s and 40s.They've only won one senior Ulster title though since the 60s.The balance of power in Ulster has shifted probably permanently and Donegal are strong favourites to win on June 23 next.
