Down's Quarter Century Wait For Ulster...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Down traditionally are a great team to watch when they get their tails up. Even two years ago was it, when they beat Monaghan in Ulster it was a great game of hard, attacking football. Those types of performances seem to be fewer and far between now though. It'd be great to see a footballing resurgence there. Others have mentioned their All Ireland run in 2010. They played some great games along the way to get there that year. The Kerry match was brilliant but the semi final against Kildare was a superb match also.

They just don't seem to have a marquee forward or two that could really bring them on. Not sure what you were watching.

We have played them twice in the last few years in championship. They beat us by two points in 2017 and Monaghan were very out of sorts at the back that day.

We hammered them in 2016 by almost 20 points.

I don't his presence really affected either outcome that much.

I'm on about Cavan

The All Ireland semi final of 2003 dragged Kerry kicking and screaming into the modern game. Whilst they won't admit it their style of football completly changed and they moved away from the traditional way of doing things.

Down are very proud of their history and so they should - whilst they have not won a major honour for 25 years they along with Cavan are still the most successful counties in Ulster which says something in itself. I think the major problem with Down is they are relucant to embrace the modern game and are stuck in the middle on how best to proceed.

Tyrone have had a successful 25 years in comparsion and everybody wants to be successful. Could Down have went down the road of negative football two decades ago? - probably not. Their management appointment this year is interesting in that it signals to me they have finally realised the "Down" way of doing things where they produced the best to watch teams to leave Ulster is no good in the modern era.

The end of the great 90's teams also saw two of the top three teams in the country being based in Ulster - Armagh and Tyrone followed by the McGuiness era so it would have been tough for anybody. Ulster is no near as strong these days so if Down can get themselves together it might not end up being 30 years without an Ulster title.

Fair enough Lockjaw - I read the two posts in a row!

However, for Cavan they just havent been good enough. They have been close, in Breffini the last two times. However its their home turf and they always raise it for the home crowd....especially against the noisy neighbours. Arguably, in 2015 their discipline cost them and inexperience. In 2017 it was all inexperience. Even without McManus i think Monaghan are still the better team but not by much.

When teams overly focus on Conor it tends to leave other avenues more open for us like Kieran Hughes (has caused your own county lots of problems in the past), Jack McCarron or Conor McCarthy. This year we can hopefully add O'Hanlon, McGinn, Bannigan to that attacking threat.

In 2013 he scored 3 from play, in 2015 he scored 2 from play. Hardly groundbreaking.

Not discussing the league....because its the league.

Cavan havent been good enough in Ulster, same as Down for a number of years. Its been Donegal and Tyrone, a wee bit from us in the last few years. Before that it was Tyrone and Armagh. Its per other posts, the past counts for nothing. Cavan and Down have glorious pasts but today there is not a single player in either squad that has won an ulster title.

For what its worth I do believe Cavan could beat us and we are likely overdue a beating but surely aspiration has to be winning Ulster for Cavan (and Down)

Louth beat Down in the league up in Newry this year to dash the Mourne men promotion hopes. That was the poorest Down team that I ever seen. Down are a great GAA County. They became the first county to bring Sam across the border in which they did this five times. The only All Ireland final that they have ever lost was against Cork in 2010 and they only lost it by a point. Amazingly their are the only county that Kerry have played in the Championship in which the Kingdom have never beaten. They have played five times and Down have won on each occasion. They have on average beaten the Kingdom by 6 points, scored 8 goals against them and only conceded 2 goals. Some record indeed.

Yes Lockjaw, we've been doing very well in the League that's for sure. But to win anything in Championship a marquee forward is essential. The bigger your pick the better chance of unearthing one. Monaghan are very lucky to have McManus. Our games with them are always close regardless and I don't know how much better they are than us without him but I think they will suffer badly when he hangs up the boots. They have some nice forwards coming through but forwards as consistent as him are as rare as hen's teeth.

Some real good points there but unfortunately Down have a lot of work to do from minors right up , to much talk about past glory days in Down
