A good thread. I'm not sure if I'd have Offaly above Westmeath going on the league? You're very generous to your own Carlow also.

1) Galway
2) Dublin
3) Clare
4) Cork
5) Tipp
6) Wexford
7/8) Westmeath/Laois (at a very similar level)
9) Kerry
10) Offaly

Very sad seeing Offaly at 10 but they will rise again.

Well, if you use the most recent Hoganstand provided rankings and add the hurling and football rankings together as a measure you get the following overall ranking:
Dublin
Galway
Kerry
Clare
Cork
Meath
Mayo
Westmeath
Laois
Tipp
Tyrone
Roscommon
Waterford
Kildare
Limerick
Donegal
Armagh
Monaghan
Wexford
Carlow
Offaly
Derry
Down
Antrim
Cavan
Fermanagh
Wicklow
Louth
Longford
Sligo
Leitrim
London

This is an unsatisfactory way of determining overall rank due to i) the original rankings being subjective and ii) not taking into account big drop offs between slots (e.g. Tipp are ranked 9th in hurling (somehow) and Laois are 10th etc.).

I'd say its more like:
Galway
Dublin
Clare
Cork
Tipp
Kerry
Westmeath
Laois
Wexford
Carlow
Offaly
...

Well done young man and fair play to you for coming up with that system for working it out.
It's a comprehensive way of sorting it out I can't imagine anyone can argue with your formula.

Pity used to be great to see players compete at both levels but practically impossible 4 players to give that commitment to both

Dublin not better in this stupid made up dual comparison with gaa and thugby? Best football team there's been arguably and undoubtedly the best rugby team the islands had, constantly handing Munster their arses and obviously much more successful in terms of trophies won. (obviously apart from that friendly match Munster won years ago against new zealand)

From memory 19 counties won all Ireland football and 13 have won the hurling cup.

The follow have won both:
Cork
Tipp
Limerick
Kerry (yes Kerry)
Galway
Dublin
Wexford
Offaly

In ulster we played a different brand of hurling so when the hurling rules were adopted by the gaa the southern rules prevailed

With a population of 190,000 we provided 5 out of 42 B and I Lions, about ten years ago, a panel drawn from a population of almost 70 million. Limerick had one in every 420 people in Ireland and Britain and had just shy of 1 in 8 players in that trip. There was 12 from the entire island that year. Dublin have won six Hurling All Irelands, but not a single Dublin born player was on any of those teams.

It is difficult, but some players are willing to make the commitment until usually the manager of the dominant sport in the county make them choose.

Also i believe some county boards are making lads choose one sport or the other at minor level now.
