Replying To Gleebo:  "Didn't say it was all down to JOM, but funny how they didn't win any Sams immediately before or after his tenure...

O'Mahony took Mayo to their first senior final in 38 years, managed them to an U-21 All-Ireland win and won a Nestor Cup with Leitrim, so aside from a bad second spell with Mayo in which he had political distractions, I don't think it's a credible argument to say he was a bad manager.

Refusing him any credit is simply churlish."
You stated in your original comment that I replied to that there may have have been no All-Ireland's in that period only for O'Mahony. Which is hardly credible, good manager though he was. And you then went onto cite the fact that there have been no All-Ireland's since for us as confirmation of that.

I was fortunate enough to know a member of your '50 and '51 teams who made the following observations at the time:
1. That any good manager should have won an All-Ireland with those players and
2. That many of those players were once in a generation footballers.

No.2 is the reason why we've won nothing since. It's also the reason why good manager though he was, JOM didn't win the All-Ireland in his 2nd spell with Mayo as the same amount of talent just wasn't there that he had in his time with Galway. Political distractions can't hide that fact.

Replying To Gleebo:  "Much like Galway have been missing from September ever since, I suppose!

And let me remind you that Mayo have won their last adult football All-Ireland more recently than Galway. But that doesn't suit your narrative, so you'll probably run it down.

Maybe Galway's fairweather support will even deign to travel the hour or so up to Castlebar, you never know."
They would have won them without O'Mahony. That was a magic Galway team. Absolutely class footballers. O'Mahony showed how good his coaching abilities were when he returned to Mayo after the county board shafted Mickey Moran. He did it to get elected. He should have been out the end of his first summer after the Salthill massacre. A nice man I'm sure and good luck to his political career but I don't get the argument that he was a good coach.

The fact is that Galway won the All Ireland with JOM as manager. He was the right man at the right time. They were great footballers and he brought out the best in them. It's not a case of one or the other.

I find it hard to believe that Markievicz park in Sligo the same width as Croke Park and just three yrds shorter

Would it be fair to say that no other County hurling or football have lost more than 20 All Ireland finals except the Galway hurlers

Galway have 9 football All Irelands, not 7.
25, 34, 38, 56, 64, 65, 66, 98, 01. We're 3rd on the roll of honour, a long long way behind the top 2.

Kerry have lost 22 All-Ireland football finals. Admittedly they do have a bit of a better ratio than the Galway hurlers though. :)

You'll need to take it up with Cully, Mayomaniac, assuming he's still in good health and posting on HS. Maybe a Sligo poster can confirm if the Park stats are accurate..?

Would Galway win an All-Ireland with a different manager?

We might see a bit of Mayo reaction this wknd I think.

I've been critical of Galway's approach under Walsh as I don't think he's getting the best out of that squad imo but to be fair they are usually quite difficult to beat.

Too close to call for me.

I think this is a game that could be potentially damaging for Mayo's mindset if they lose, but I don't think they will, Galway are very iffy at the moment but they like beating Mayo are should be very well up for it. I was amazed at Mayo's lack of fire last week. I was never one for connecting league and championship but the landscape has changed somewhat since my day.

Kevin Walsh already confirmed he's out for the rest of the league unless he's playing games.

Iffy? Beaten by Dublin and only beaten by Kerry by a point does not iffy make. I don't think we're world beaters by any stretch, but calling us iffy, when for the last two years we've been fairly consistent in the league is off the mark.

As to who will win? A lot depends on which Mayo shows up. If they play like they did against Dublin, there'll be no contest. If they play like they did against Tyrone, it should be a much tighter affair. Still think we'll shade it though, but I really expect it not to be a spectacle for the neutral; it has been a while since a Galway vs Mayo game produced a show case.

Wet and windy night promised for Castlebar. Galway don't seem to want to score and Mayo don't seem able to score, so a six points apiece draw. Hopefully the ladies match might be exciting!
