Falling Football Attendances

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So James Horan has stated some of the reasons for the fall in attendances in 2018 despite more games
as follows

- condensed championship
- Mayo's early exit
- Galway playing Dublin again (!)

So nothing to do with Dublin and opposition county fans not being interested in un-competitive games being played in Croke Park?

I hadn't actually thought about Mayo's early exit being a factor but of course that is. 4 games in croke park in 2017 compared with none last year.

Boring football, and uncompetitive games are a factor.

Going to Croke Park is very expensive. Travel tickets food etc.

It is also not so much of a novelty any more for many teams who play early round matches there.

Not that I've been there for a while though...

Nothing that a price increase won't fix...

World Cup year

Strong hurling championship

Dublin being wholly dominant in Ireland

Kerry being wholly dominant in Munster

Fermanagh reaching Ulster final

Monaghan reaching AI semifinals

Longford, Carlow and Laois progress in Leinster

Smaller supported counties did well this year.

A longer term trend is that there probably are fewer casual supporters. The sorts of people who went to matches for the craic for want of other things to.

The future of the GAA is to give more profile to the league and grow the hard core support.

And the solution? A price increase HAHAHAHAHA. The Leinster football final 2017 66,734, 2018 it was just 41,728. A whopping 37% drop. The over investment in the 00's in Dublin football to bring them back to a prosperous state has backfired, majorly. A lot of Dublin supporters are not bothered about Dublin now because they are whitewashing the opposition. Who wants to fork out money on tickets, travel, food only to watch a completely lobsided game. Exactly, nobody!

Attendances are falling because one team is dominating and it's an expensive day out if you want to take your family. Hurling attendances are booming because any one of several teams could win the championship and the format change means all the best sides are playing each other now.

So its injury time and Mayo Leitrim is a draw. Its a qualifier and defeated team are out of the Championship!

Which team gets the favorable decision off the ref? Considering the ref has aspirations to get the call for the All-Ireland final!

Very expensive. That's the real advantage Dublin fans have over the rest of us...not having to fork out expensive trips across the country in the the height of summer

Papers highlighting two matchs with big decreases with regard to Dublin

1. The Dublin All-Ireland semi-final of 2017 was against Tyrone......and they always turn out in numbers....so maybe the issue is more Galway than Dublin. If the Semi had been against any Ulster team there would have been 70K+

2. Leinster Final of 2017 was against Kildare, again a county who travel...Laois are only good for moaning (!)...so again a Laois issue not Dublin. Final against Kildare or Meath over have seen a 50K+ attendance.

Is this just a random thought or are you saying decisions have been swayed by this in the past? Would love to hear exapmples

The constant whinging by most of the Irish media does not help the GAA especially Gaelic football. We had a thread here last year- "Can football survive the Rugby onslaught". Check it out.

Hurling attendances are down too. Hardly "booming".

Exactly, if we get Meath this year in the Leinster final then there will be a big increase on 2018. Galway going well in the hurling too last year had an effect with that semi final I'm sure.

For the All-Ireland series, yeah. But there were four fewer All-Ireland hurling fixtures in 2018 than in 2017, and the provincial championships saw an upsurge in attendances.
