Mayo V Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The last time they met Cavan won by 1-14 to 0-15 in Division 1 at the same venue two years ago. But central to that victory for the Breffni County in Castlebar was Gearoid McKiernan who is currently out injured. I expect Mayo to win by 3-5 this time. Cavan to fall short again.

A game Mayo would have targeted to win no doubt. However you need to be careful in these sort of games. The young new players everyone is talking about will make mistakes and have off days ahead so patience is required and it's all part of their development.

If Mayo win this it kind of offers us a "free" game
V Dublin in Croke Park to really experiment which will be interesting.

key for cavan is that mc veety and ciaran brady get the ok after going off against Kerry. there's been flashes of some really nice football played but experience might have worked against cavan. i do expect Mayo to win but i think it'll be a good game providing cavan have everyone available.

I could see this being a stickier game for Mayo given that Tyrone were unusually open at the back last weekend, would expect Cavan to be a bit tighter. McHale Park is also a tight pitch, even within the county (Crossmolina's pitch is something like 12 metres longer than it, for example), which tends not to suit Mayo's style of play. The pitch has also broken up quite badly in the past year or so, could do with being relayed.

Mayo by a couple of points.

Hopefully we see 11 or 12 of team that defeated Tyrone and change up the 3 or 4. Perhaps leave out a couple of lads who have played 2 games so far. Just a few changes each week gives lads a real chance coming into a mostly settled team. Would love to see that full back line again

I couldn't agree more with your comments on the young new players. McDonagh and Treacy are two nice prospects but they need to be given time. Quick question where is last year's U20 captain Ryan O'Donoghue? He would offer more freshness to James Horan's attack.

I fancied us to lose both previous games, so in the interest of keeping the trend going I'm going for Cavan by 2 or 3 points. Still think we could be vulnerable to a team kicking in long ball to the edge of the square for a good ball winner, but don't know if Cavan are using that type of player right now tbh.

He's injured, got injured against Burrishoole in the club champo final. Ankle injury I think.

Not sure how I see this one going. Few lads playing Sigerson tonight although we have enough to cover them. As someone said above MacHale is a very right pitch and really works against Mayo's style of play. Would like to see Treacy and McDonagh start again. They do a great job of sticking to the sideline and that'll be key to streching Cavan. Free takers will need to be on point too. Think it'll be a real tight affair, especially if McVeety and Brady get the ok.

Thanks, great player who will get his chance. More to offer than Loftus or Conor O'Shea for example.

No faith in that full back line. Clarke probably needs a few games but have we no 3rd goalkeeper to give a go, would Schlingerman or Rory Byrne not be worth a go.
Good too see more new faces, Ruane worth a go and Colm Moran is a good talent.

This is one that Cavan have to win and they will go going with all guns blazing. McKeirnan, McVeety and Brady are 3 of Cavan's best. We know Gearoid is out but losing the other two would be detrimental to our chances.

Hope that we continue to play a more direct style and we had Kerry on the ropes for a large part of the game. Mickey Graham is building a new structure and it will take time. But he will want to leave with 2 points. One could argue that maintaining division one status will do more for the development of the team for next year than a big run in the championship.

Should be a good game but not sure how the pitch will hold up especially with bad weather! Going be a war of attrition.

Would agree with your assessment.

I think that's a very strong Mayo line-up and unfortunately I think they'll find scored a bit easier to come by than ourselves. I'll travel in hope tho.

How does Ger Cafferkey keep appearing at FB?

Looking forward to watching this one. Cavan showed potential quality in attack against Kerry and were unlucky not to take something from that game. They fell foul to some, let's say tactical nous, by Kerry in the second half. Id expect that's a lesson learned. Difficult to know how much of Mayo's dismantling of Tyrone was down to their own strength or to the Red Hands' current weakness- suspect more of the latter. So this could be closer than the media maintain.
A tough, niggly match in prospect with Cavan maybe getting the nod by a point or two.

Good to see a few more young players being tried. Also in favour of Stephen Coen getting a couple of runs at corner back. He has the attributes to be a success in that position provided he has the instincts for it. Hopefully the team will perform and entertain the usual decent home support. I agree that taking a form line from the Tyrone game would be a mistake, but it's good to be looking up for a change in the league rather than down at the trapdoor like we've been for the last few years.

Colm Moran looked were very good when Wesport won the all ireland intermediate a few years ago.
The other corner forward from that team, Oisín McLaughlin looked quality too. Is he around the Mayo panel? They were minors then

Good to see Ger Cafferkey back to full fitness and showing he still has the appetite. Stephen Coen is also showing that the full back line will benefit from his athleticism. The big tests lie ahead, I know, but the 3 games so far have already brought some value. Kerry supporters too must be pleased with what their new regime has achieved so far.
