Ref missed loads of steps during the whole game but in all honestly who cares, both teams had to do a job but guaranteed none of them wanted to be out on that pitch during that storm, in fact should game in any sport be allowed to take place where weather warnings are in place, a piece of flying debris could have come onto the pitch and strike a player or officials, outside the grounds there was more cones, plastic railings and rubbish that could have blown onto the pitch, we are well used to wind and Met Eireann have a habit of issuing weather warnings for farts but this was the worse I've seen for over 20 years riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 28/01/2019 21:55:24 2160580 Link 1 |
When you are dealing with a gale force wind usually the team availing of it in the first half build up a lead and it takes the other most of the second half to catch up. As I said once Mayo caught up there was only going to be one winner. Once Mayo went ahead supporters from both counties started leaving the stand. There are games that Mayo have won by a point and you end up being on the edge of your seat and feeling you were lucky to get the win. On Saturday, from ten minutes out, I never felt that we were going to lose. As for the scores, 1-8 under those conditions was a decent return as each score was a minor miracle in itself. I'm not saying over the course of the game that Mayo were comfortably better, in fact if Roscommon had a bit more self belief in the first half and didn't pull everyone back when Mayo were in possession, they may well have built up an unassailable lead. Four points of a lead was never going to be enough and, even though Mayo huffed and puffed, they were still, in my opinion, relatively comfortable in the end.

Roscommon over carried for one of their points in the 2nd half. Also, the referee's biggest mistake was not not sending off Donie Smith. Roscommon should have been down to 14 men for the entire 2nd half.
