Admission To League Games Set To Increase

J Horan the other day said they needed to raise funding to allocate more development money to clubs. Why not cut the funding to the GPA? We are seeing that elitism costs money and it's going to be up to the grassroots to fund it.

As someone said above if this was really to benefit the clubs they could cut affiliation fees.

Most people took the story as all the clubs benefitting from the increase, it needs to be clarified, 1/ is it only clubs who apply to Croke Park for development funding, 2/ is it only clubs vested in the GAA who can apply for funding, 3/ can community facilities shared by GAA & other sports apply for this funding or 4/ or is every club juvenile, adult, hurling, football, camoige, lgfa going to benefit. Statement needs to be clarified.

Maybe I'm overlooking something, but I'm struggling to unravel the reasoning for the price increases. It's all very fine and well saying it's been 8 years since they were last increased, but what are the GAA's major overheads?

It owns all the stadia.

Volunteers do all the tasks such as matchday stewarding, programme selling, working the shop, parking etc. Maybe Croke Park is an exception in this regard (security, hospitality staff).

The Association receives payment for sponsorship of the championships across the codes, TV broadcasting rights and overseas streaming of the games.

That leaves stuff like floodlighting, marketing, and a small cadre of professional staff, which should be easily absorbed within the current budget.

As posters have already pointed out, a tenner may not be a large amount to a single person, but add in a family and the cost snowballs over the course of a championship season.

The raison d'être of the GAA should not be profit-making for the sake of it.

I'd say there's 3 fundamental reasons:

i) Fixed costs have increased recently. This includes the likes of insurance, electricity and Garda attendance etc. (Gardaí got a pay hike recently which would no doubt be passed onto the punter).

ii) There have been significant capital costs, such as the upgrade of PUC and the relevant rates that go along with paying for this. There may well be other plans in place / already underway in relation to infrastructure and / or development costs, pay outs to teams etc. which demand extra resources.

iii) There is no doubt but that the number crunchers in HQ performed an analysis of supply and demand and came to the conclusion that increased prices would not affect demand to the extent that their net intake would be down. This seems counterintuitive given recent figure breakdowns but you would imagine HQ would have access to these figures before they hiked the price. It doesn't appear to make sense on the face of things.
