Sigerson Cup/Fitzgibbon Cup 2019

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So the draws where made for the 2019 Sigerson Cup and Fitzgibbon Cup last month in what continues to be two of the most exciting competitions in the GAA.
Any word on the dates/times/venues on these games as they are due to commence soon?
Also any word on what Inter-County players will be togging out this year?

In the Sigerson Cup UCD will be many people favorites as the defending champions are chasing their 3rd titles in 4 year. UCD will also have the added bonus of having of Con O'Callaghan available for a full campaign for the first time. They won the Freshers All-Ireland in 2015 and reached the Final in 2016 so they will remain a strong side this year.
I also expect DCU and NUIG to go far too. DCU have won the last 3 Freshers All-Irelands. NUIG were very unlucky vs UCD in the Final last year and had a strong Freshers team in 2017. The Ulster Colleges such as UUJ and St. Mary's are always strong as they usually have the best pick of the players up North. In terms of a dark horse I think NUIM could surprise people. That had a very good Freshers team last year by all accounts and can all upon Kildare players Daniel Flynn (taking a year out from KIldare) and Paddy Brophy.

For the Fitzgibbon Cup I be a little more in the dark but Mary I will surely start as favorites going for 4 in a row although they will have to do without HOTY Cian Lynch this year. UL are the last team to the competition apart from the Teaching College so I expect a determined team from them this year. UCC had a few good Freshers teams in the last 4 years so I think they could be in the mix. It will be interesting to see how last year's surprise package DCU and DIT fare this year. I fancy DCU to have a better campaign out of the two

Mary I aren't going for 4 in a row. UL won it last year. Last years finalists DCU are clear favourites, they have a ridiculous team

Agreed DCU look seriously strong on paper. They have 5 of the Wexford senior team, including the seriously talented Rory O Connor.
They also have Kilkenny seniors Donnelly and Delaney aswel as Waterford senior Patrick Curran.

Can never write off any of the Limerick colleges or UCC though.

NUIG and St.Marys 1-11 a piece after extra time, second period of extra time or free kick comp. to follow, not sure which.

Mary's win on frees, big statement as NUIG have a very strong panel. Not out yet as first round losers have a back door this year.

UCC seriously strong this year. Bringing Kerry seniors like Andrew Barry and Brian Begley off the bench. Serious firepower up front with Spillane, Horgan, Clifford, O'Shea etc.

Dramatic finishes in both semi finals of the Fitzgibbon earlier this week. UCC got a very late penalty in extra-time to beat DCU by a point. It looked very soft to be honest and harsh on DCU who were the better team in extra-time.
NUIG had a late goal disallowed for square-ball against Mary I, which would've taken the game to extra-time.
Both competitions generally produce good games, without as heavy an emphasis on tactics.

Amazing achievement by St. Mary's Belfast to qualify for their second Sigerson final in three years. Keeping the high powered UCD forward scoreless in the first half is unbelievable.

They don't have many big names but sometimes that works in your favour in Sigerson when some sides have players coming and going from county panels.

What's the story about St Marys playing an illegal player? Hope to God there's nothing in it.

David Gough gives a free out for a blatant penalty one of the easiest penalty calls you can ever make but according to David it was a free out. Absolutely shocking refereeing.

There would have been nothing in that game but for the sending off. Between Shane McGuigan and Sean O'Shea for MOTM. The two number 11's stood out.

Was the free out for the 7/8 steps before the tackle clon?

Anyway well done to UCC And billy Morgan and Dr con on their victory.

No steps just a poor ref, the two 11's very good well done to UCC but the ref was shocking for Mary's and I couldn't care less who won. The red card wow what a bad call.
