David V Goliath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The Leinster club SFC final between Mullinalaghta and Kilmacud Crokes on Sunday 9 December is being billed as a 'David and Goliath' clash.

Mullinalaghta, a small parish in north Longford with about 400 people and half of it is Gowna, Co. Cavan versus a Dublin club with a membership of over 4,800 making it one of Ireland's largest GAA clubs.

Can the men from Mullinalaghta slay the Dublin giants?

I'd love to see them do it.

Crokes were lucky enough to survive yesterday. They luck dangerous and havehave great pace going forward but their defence was a shambles. I don't know anything about Mullinalaghta and whether they have the ability to go after the Crokes backline. I hope they do themselves credit.

Mullinalaghta were well able to mix it with St Vincents a few years ago. Vins needed a strong finish to win if I remember correctly. Nothing to fear.

I thought Cian O'Sullivan was the worst player on the pitch yesterday. He was fumbling ball after ball in the full back line and got turned over in possession too many times. If it was anyone else he'd be taken off.

O'Sullivan nowhere near fit enough to be playing yesterday imo.

Looked well off the pace.

Different clubs face different challenges and Crokes operate in a hot bed of challenges from top level Rugby, Crokes lost the likes of Ian Maddigan, Ian McKilay, Scott Penney and Eoin Barr to professional rugby, all Crokes lads.

So one mans Goliath is another mans David. ;)

It's a very competitive concentrated area sports wise especially for youngsters showing aptitude in multiple sports.

Similar to lads heading to Australia you can't deny lads an opportunity for a professional sport career and decent living.

I've heard a few say Brian O Driscoll was a supremely talented GAA player had he not been as equally talented at Rugby.

Dont see an Ireland in a Crokes myself but hopefully a Leinster, but happy to be proved wrong.

So you are contradicting the guy who started this post by saying that Kilmacud have 4,800 members!

Ha why would i, they are your words not mine.

What i did was provide some context and make the point different clubs face different challenges, a big population base has its ups but also its challenges with many sporting sharks swimming in those south side waters as the loss of some top sport stars i named to international rugby is particularly challenging for a club in Crokes location, perhaps more so then Mullinalaghta on this occasion.

But i take on board the general point i suppose its no different to Meath having a population of 200k and getting beat by Longford with a population of 40k. If we use that narrow measure.

Best of luck to both tams!!

Mullinalaghta have been without two former intercounty players as well over that last three years, both living In NYC. All the more impressive.

Sure Ballyhale is a tiny parish and they absolutely slaughtered Ballyboden (one of the biggest clubs in a Ireland).

Now I know you can't compare Kilkenny hurling to Longford football but if they work like absolute dogs they have a chance.
