As a Corkman with half a million of a population that have dominated nearly every senior football or hurling competition you need to shut up.

I don't like the model of super clubs covering a population catchment area. I can see why the idea of big clubs are attractive to the best players but ultimately if there was more clubs you would have more players getting more of a chance to play for a first team as opposed to a third or fourth team. Historically the GAA has thrived on this in rural areas as this meant more young men wanting to play (as they have more if a chance to play for the team (first team)) and a huge connection of the GAA to a small place. If the GAA is ultimately spreading interest/playing numbers than increasing the number of clubs is the best way to go. Anyway I'm not just talking about Dublin, the fact is all over the country people are moving into towns and many towns populations have multiplied while some rural areas populations have fallen back. I have heard of some clubs amalgamating in line with these demographic trends I am not aware of many new GAA clubs being formed. Do you honestly think a place like Tallaght is best served by having so few GAA clubs ?

I don't think I'll change your mind and I get where you are coming from. There's a lot to be said for having a large club though with good facilities and multiple strong adult teams. The second team structures are not currently great in Meath and I think that clouds a little your value of second team football. Having fewer clubs but with good quality reserves is great. There's more variety for players too. Someone having a particularly busy time in work for a year can play down a team. Take it less seriously. I'm part of a small club. Currently I'm not going to play properly next year. The choice is commit and train hard for the season to play for the A team or I just play for the second team where the standard is a bit of a farce really. There's no in between. Bigger clubs are better able to cater for more needs and are much better equipped for that transition from juvenile to senior. They can still be and I believe are very much a central part of the community. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 01/12/2018 16:28:54 2153011 Link 3 |
Perhaps I am a sensitive culchie, but I find instructing anyone to shut up a bit rude.
