Minor All Stars

(Oldest Posts First)

I saw that minor football all stars were announced this week. When did this become a thing? I never heard about them before. I assume there are also hurling ones but I couldn't see them. Either way my question is, is having all stars for 17 year olds a good idea? I'm not sure it is.

Winning team played 16 competive games & did over 100 training sessions, gave up being dual players & summer jobs as required so surely these 15/16/17 year olds deserve some recognition. The GAA have no problems with it, they introduced this new age grade & lauded the teams from the Ard Comhairle for their efforts. Too many Helicopter Parents as one underage manager put it.

Agree. Bestowing an "All Star" award on a young kid is the kind of thing that can go to their head. You might see fewer minors in future making it to senior level for that very reason. Granted of course if some kid with poor self esteem plays well enough to get an award, official recognition like this might give them a boost they need. But on balance I think it is a bad idea.

You can recognise and rewards kids for the work/effort put in without giving them awards called all stars. We've all seen plenty of adult players do well and get awards etc and it goes to their head nevermind 16/17 year olds.
Minor is not about winning its about development. 15/16/17 year olds on these squads are getting plenty of recognition simply from playing on these teams. If they get to latter stages of the competition they get to play live on tv. They get to play in front of 10000/20000 even more on biggest of days.
Lauding teams and praising them is quite different from giving awards called all stars.
This is nothing like helicopter parenting

Well said. Of course it's a nice recognition for these lads. And may I congratulate the Meath players on getting theirs. And indeed all the players named.

Dont really have a problem to be honest with them, sure awards exist in clubs etc. Congrats to all the winners.

If that's the case should we get rid of MOTM in minor games as well? Its just an award for performing well.

A crazy stupid idea, for what is effectively a juvenile competition.

having seen a fair amount of the minor games this year, the hurling selections seem reasonable with a good split across the teams that performed well in the provincial competitions and then how they performed in the All Ireland series.
