Naming A Team Before A Championship Match

(Oldest Posts First)

We all enjoy buying a match day programme.
Many of you will pay 5e for one on Sunday.
But then usually there are a string of changes to the actual starting team.

At the moment naming a team for a GAA Championship team is a pure joke.
In soccer I know teams may not be released until an hour or so before a game.
But then in rugby, teams are named nearly a week before hand.
Shows ultimate respect too for supporters etc.
You don't see it that much in hurling either just more of a nonsense football thing.

Personally dont see why managers name a fake team. Teams generally know if the opposition team is fake or not.

Personally I think teams should be named on a Friday night.
The team then should be able to allowed to make one change from that starting 15.
If the actual team starting has more than the one change then that team should be punished by losing half of their allowed subs during the match.

agree/disagree?

Starting teams are the worst kept secret in the world. Oppositions know the starting team.
I've never known why teams bother with fake teams.

I say name the team 60 mins prior to throw in Woops
see no need for this naming it on the friday lark
would cut out all this shite aswell

Submit a matchday squad with numbers for the programme and leave the team till 60 misn prior

whats the necessity for it to be a day or 2 prior?

I agree with Liam. The soccer way is good. Adds to the build up all the speculation.

Name a squad the Wed before the game, have it in the programme with everyone's number and then name the team anytime up to 30 mins before the game.

It works well in soccer. Great speculation in the ground when the team is announced in terms of who is playing where and what tactics are to be used etc.

Squad numbers is the way to go. Have the entire squad printed in the program and then leave space where people can fill in the team if they want. Then there is no confusion about who's wearing what number or giving out about different players being started. Works perfectly well in soccer.

Think it's more the media. Papers can talk about who's playing where and the match up's. doesn't make much sense if half the players are playing right enough.

Just give players squad numbers at start of January or maybe the league every year and they keep that number for the year.
Naming dummy teams is ridiculous and doesnt say much for your mental state going into a game if you think that is needed.
you should be able to name a team and only make changed due to injuries,
Not sure id agree on fines for players pulling out/changes to team after its named as all depends on why players are/were changed from original starting 15

Good point Liam actually
I was thinking more old school and the excitement of hearing the team announced a few days prior to a big match but ya I like the idea of having squad numbers and then being able to fill in the numbers on the matchday lineup.
