LoI attendances aren't great obviously in general but there are a lot of people playing soccer in Galway city. Far more than play GAA or rugby I'd wager. I'll be honest as say that I don't know the city all that well but soccer does seem to be strong down there. In playing numbers anyway I'd imagine it's similar to other Irish cities, soccer out in front, then GAA and a host of other sports behind. Limerick would be the same I'd imagine though you'd have more of a handle of that than I would.

Soccer is far and away the biggest sport in Limerick participation wise Mes Rugby a DISTANT second But, crucially, Rugby is king for numbers at the door, bums on seats and jerseys on the back ie finance GAA doesn't map in the city 90% of the time bar Na P. Claughan in particular are a shadow of what they were. Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 24/08/2018 14:51:16 2136318 Link 0 |
Soccer as a participation sport is the biggest in the city but look at Limerick City and it's support-terrible. The Limerick hurlers have far and away the biggest support in the county 45,000 in Croker last Sunday and 90,000 in the city last Monday is proof of that. Munster rugby obviously has a huge support but people forget Munster represents 6 counties not 1 and when Thomond is full(rare enough) there fans are from all over the province

I'm a limerick gaa man and limerick winning the all-ireland was brilliant and hopefully it will see hurling on the rise again in the city, there is no point saying how great the gaa is in the city cause that's a lie,the north side of the city has one gaa club who are doing amazing work but have a huge pick where soccer isn't as strong,on the south side of the city, you have five clubs all on top of each other, two of the clubs have no hurling and the other three are all joined together from U14 to U21,it's a very hard job keeping gaa alive in the city but hopefully this all-ireland will get the children back hurling.

As anyone who has been in or around Limerick for the last 7 days will have seen there is a massive interest and goodwill towards hurling and it's Up to the GAA to promote hurling and capitalise on this opportunity. We have a young team with some very marketable characters and now is the time to help the Claughauns, Old Christians and Ballinacura Gaels and get Abbey Sarsfields re-organised. This can be last Sunday's greatest legacy and insure we don't have another 45 year wait

We in Galway used to jeer at Limerick GAA. I always thought Limerick was (WAS) a great GAA county but had been completely overshadowed by Munster rugby and possibly Soccer. Galway is a great GAA city and county. A great Senior hurling team and good clubs in the south eg Athenry, Loughrea. And an up and coming Senior football team, and finally 2 good league of Ireland soccer teams- Galway utd and Mervue. Connacht rugby has been growing for the last 20 years, but remains a minority sport. It is growing though and the GAA must be wary. Traditionally GAA in Limerick was always stronger in football. City based clubs have won 53 senior football championships to 28 in hurling. Some of those clubs no longer exist. Commercials are gone a long time due mainly to being the city centre club and having no home of their own. They won 16 championships. Treaty Sarsfields/ stone won 13 between them. They went out of business in the 80s. Their traditional base is the thomondgate and now Monroe's area which is a working class area and always was. Na Piarsigh is actually a break away club formed to cater for the newer middle class areas on the north side. Claughaun were a very strong hurling and football club when I was growing up. I think they have 12 in each code. They share a catchment area with St Patrick's but used to pull from the corbally and Mayorstone area in the 80s and 90s. They lost this and it coincides with their decline. They had , and probably have, a very successful pub and function business and took their eye off the ball a bit I the late 90s to recently. They face an uphill battle to reestablish themselves in the area. St Pats seem to be doing better than any time since the 60s. They are senior in football and Intermediate in hurling for the first time in years. Monaleen are now a huge club and senior in both codes as are Na Piarsigh. It will take Monaleen to breakthrough in senior hurling but they are producing the players. The other 2 to 3 clubs are struggling. Abbey Sarsfields are a relatively new club and have no grounds. They are based in Corbally which is strong in Soccer and Rugby but had a tradition in GAA. If they can get a ground of their own they have a chance. Old Christians (hurling) and Ballinacurra Gaels (football) by and large share the same area and players. It's largely working class and dominated by soccer but also has Young Munsters in it. As someone who is involved with gaa in inner city, hurling is a struggle for the south side city clubs, Abbey and ballinacura have no hurling, St Patrick's, claughaun and Old Christians are all joined together in hurling from U14 to U21, hopefully this all-ireland win, will get children back playing hurling in the inner-city.

Football is funny in limerick. Its the bigger game in the city, the bigger game in the biggest county town Newcastle West, and the bigger game in 3/4 of the bigger towns ie Abbeyfeale, Askeaton, Foynes etc Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 31/08/2018 14:56:15 2137924 Link 0 |
Yes it is, limerick football club level is very poor,it's more about fitness then skill, limerick senior and intermediate football is so wide open, very hard to pick a winner compared to hurling where you have only a couple of winners.
