I never saw him play but John Jobber Mcgrath made the 84 team of the century. Willy Shanley, Sean Mclaughlin, Mick Cosgrave Darren Mccormack, Brendan Murtagh were all wonderful hurlers. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1445 - 24/08/2018 07:49:39 2136157 Link 1 |
from my own county it has to be pat horgan (hoping against hope he has two more years in him and hopefully we can get across the line for him to win one) that point in the drawn 2013 final vs clare was just unbeleivable and worth the win in any game but domhnails point after was also great and that day the draw was the best we could have got because infairness if we managed the all ireland that year it would have been a robbery pidge (Cork) - Posts: 543 - 25/08/2018 20:09:45 2136554 Link 0 |
From Carlow it's Paddy Quirke. He used to get man of the match awards when playing with Leinster in the Railway cup in the 80s carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 25/08/2018 20:38:16 2136563 Link 0 |
Yeah Watson was a top class hurler just didn't seem to have the temperament for inter county hurling, seemed to be always on and off Antrim squads awful shame.

from my county it has to be Danny McNaughton, was outstanding for both club and county, always top of the scoring in the national leagues. exref (Antrim) - Posts: 63 - 09/09/2018 22:00:54 2140570 Link 0 |
My own county, my father (who shall remain anonymous) probably most of the 1961 side but more recently Brian McMahon. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8585 - 09/09/2018 22:40:54 2140580 Link 3 |
I've been following Galway since about 1979 and for me Ollie Canning is definitely the best I've seen from my own county. From elsewhere, Ciaran Carey, John Mullane and Tony Browne would be right up there.

you could easily list 30-40 great players that never won an all Ireland or even more from all counties big and small due to the fact the big 3 have the monopoly of all Irelands between them..its nearly too hard to pick one. every county could have 6 or 7 that deserved an all ireland preddan (Kildare) - Posts: 733 - 10/09/2018 12:36:13 2140688 Link 1 |

All weaker counties in hurling have some players who if born in a competitive county would be house hold names and would have held their own on All Ireland teams, the problem is they only have few of them. It's impossible to really judge these players against the best as they never got to play in the really big games. In the recent past in Meath Nicky Horan and Pat Potterton come to mind. (My father mentions Fer Foran and Ned Giles (Trevor's grandfather) as being great Meath hurlers from a long time ago). I'm sure the likes of Kerry, Westmeath, Wicklow, Kildare, Carlow, Laoise and other similar counties would similarly mention a good lot of names. Often makes me wonder could some of the weaker hurling counties have almagated teams for the Championship the same way Kerry have divisional teams in their club championship ?. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1337 - 15/09/2018 07:06:01 2141842 Link 0 |
id say ciaran carey felt the next best thing when limerick and cian lynch won the all ireland.....like the old saying an ounce of breeding is worth a ton of feeding. munsterchamps (Limerick) - Posts: 1095 - 15/09/2018 18:07:40 2141894 Link 0 |
PJ Keane and Tom McGarry, a distant relation of the famed Kilkenny clan, were great players from Limerick and a fellow parishoner of mine Pat Hartnett. Long after the latter player had retired people from other counties recalled him, when they found out where I hailed from.

its a great debate. From Galway I would say Eugene Cloonan or Padraig Kelly. Overall it would be John Mullane. clare_sparrow (Galway) - Posts: 425 - 16/09/2018 06:08:57 2141933 Link 0 |
