Who Dares To Speak Of 98

(Oldest Posts First)

Did anyone hear this documentary on Radio 1 yesterday, around 7.30 - 8PM?

Fantastic memories from the 1998 hurling championship. I'd forgotten how intense it had all been.

The show covered the 1998 Clare v Waterford Munster Final, Colin Lynch's three month suspension, the Clare v Offaly trilogy, Offaly winning the All Ireland.

Contributions from Jimmy Cooney, Willie Barret (refs), Fergie Toughy (Clare) and many others.

Superb.

excellent documentary..it was aired on Saturday also from around 1.30-2pm and repeated last night Sunday 7.30-8pm..great piece..not just because I am from Offaly...the twists, the turns, the incidents..it was reminiscent of the Tony Keady affair the time for drama..Offaly won it out after...one thing they didn't expain though was how Jimmy Cooney came to blow the 2nd game up early..he explained in another interview I heard sometime ago that he had reffed a few league games earlier in the year (30 minutes in duration at the time) he intended playing 2 minutes injury time, 30+2=32..so he blew up 3 mins before the 35 regulation time and infact 5 minutes befoe the regulation time ended and the 2 minutes injury time, so he really blew up 5 minutes early, a lot of people say he blew it up 3 minutes early, no it was 5..infairness to him he said in his interview I heard that he didn't get a chance to rectify it on the day, the burly security guards whisked him away to the dressing room, once left the field it was a non runner to restart the game, he said had he been left on he could have...that year had it all..wasn't that the year DJ retired and then came back as far as I remember...although Clare were our rivals of the day they were an amazing team..I remember thinking of them as unbeatable at the time...

The amazing thing was the difference in media back then. The meeting to suspend Lynch had reporters live on the radio reporting outside. These days you'd have moles in the meeting tweeting. Jimmy Cooney's mistake - if that was made now, the ref would know about it seconds later.

Loughnane had probably the whole of Clare still under his spell as he had for most of his era. For a one off job he did one hell of a turnaround with Clare hurling.

I was at the Munster Final replay & the atmosphere was poisonous. I was surprised it didn't kick off in the stands. Some brutality on the field.

Waterford were outstanding in Munster, losing 2-12 to 0-12 to Tipp & reeling off 9 points in a row to win it. Then after losing the Munster final they beat Galway & lost by a point to Kilkenny.

Offaly were just too good & took their chances.

A mighty year.

the 3 priests reference wouldnt get a lot of notice these days id say!! the one man that was treated disgracefully was jimmy cooney.a decent honourable gaa man. he played and reffed with distinction. and got zero support from the gaa after all his years.

What a year for hurling some drama....Tipperary capitulation v Waterford, then they Missing a free to win Munster Championship first day...the replay was horrific, Offaly should have beaten Clare first day. Clare won the second day and Offaly finally won the 3rd.
Waterford should have beaten the cats who probably at one stage had five fingers on Liam only for James Bond to move Whelean full forward and finish off KK.
Sheep in a heap comes to mind.
Saw the you tube video few times the long hot summer think it was called.

Was driving home from a club Champo game on Sunday evening and it came on the radio. Brought back some memories. Bit of a mad summer. Don't think anyone in wildest dreams could have picked Offaly to win it all after the Babs episode

Great listen!! Clare got shafted that year. Should never have played a replay after the ref blew it early. Two minutes left and in possession of the ball, in all likelihood they'd have closed that game out.

Clare were shafted by the GAA. Offaly were disgraceful with their sit down protest. The GAA should not have given in to them.

i dunno, given what we have listenened to from galway fans on here about referees this year,i think there would have been similar outrage!
picture it though-wexford 2 points down, and the referee blows up 5 minutes early(incl extra time).i would be out there in protest.i bet you would too.
the person shafted by the gaa was jimmy cooney.once they realised the mistake, they should have played the last 5 minutes.end of.

The program was made in 2008. 10 years after the year of 1998. You have to really question the views expressed by Paul Flynn Waterford hurler on this radio documentary. He claims Waterford had better hurlers than Clare in 1998 (never mind some of the other derogatory stuff he said about Clare). Really? Let's look at some facts. The year itself 1998 Clare got 4 All stars and Waterford got 1 all stars. Waterford the better hurlers? Not at all. The 5 years before 1998 - the score is Clare 16 all stars and waterford 0 all stars. The 5 years after 1998 - the score is Clare 6 all stars and waterford 4. So maybe 20 years later now Paul - time to revise that view of yours. Maybe ye were beaten by the better team in 1998 Paul - as happened again the very next time that Waterford and Clare met again thereafter in the next serious knock out match after 1998 between the 2 counties, the 2002 all ireland semi-final. And this coming from a Tipp man. From that period 1995 to 2003 all of the people in Tipp even knew that Clare were the team to beat in Munster and nationally (not easy for a Tipp man to admit that). Waterford werent anywhere near them.
