Why Are Co-Commentators In Football So Bad?

(Oldest Posts First)

I noticed during the match yesterday that Dessie Dolan seemed incapable of giving any insight into the game, other than stating the obvious that anyone watching at home could see. Then you have Martin Carney, who is just a walking cliche machine, and as for Paul Earley, he is beyond bland. Why is it that neither RTE or Sky can find a decent co-commentator to actually analyse the game?

Some of the hurling guys are just as bad; I'm hardly sure at times whether Michael Duignan is speaking as gaeilge or in English at times.

I enjoy Kevin Cassidy when he's on, he is a character and has a great insight into the game, maybe I'm biased though in this case.

I love Duignan's analysis. Ok he speaks at 100 miles an hour but hurling's a fast game.

I find Dessie very poor too. His tone, and he's not the most articulate.

I like Michael Duignan, he certainly calls it as he sees it and will disagree with sMarty at every opportunity. My concern is not the co-presenters but the main ones - they are very poor.

I like Duignan but Dolan is dreadful.
Really doesn't bring much to the table.
Martin Carney is almost as bad.

Dessie Dolan is abysmal, getting player names wrong and just making painfully obvious observations.
Also, he said that Galway's penalty yesterday was "at a perfect height" for Cluxton - it was rolled along the ground!

Dolan so bland and bad, and everyone he mentions "is having an excellent season" , must've said it 15 times by now

Agree with the above, Dolan's terrible. Offers no insight whatsoever and states the obvious over and over again. Its painful. He reminds me of the co-commentator from Dodgeball!

Don't know why we need them at all. We went for years with one main commentator and that sufficed. Now you have the co-commentator constantly chipping in across the main guy. Sometimes they work well and you get insight, but mostly you don't. Should just get rid of them. Mícheál was always good on his own

Dessie seems to want to keep everyone happy. No real opinions or insight. Just trying to be mr nice guys. I wouldn't notice if he was or wasn't there.

Tommy Carr is even worse than Dessie Dolan .

Poor Dessie!! seems like a lovely fella but he's just not made for co-commentary. i always liked Martin Carney, might not give huge insight but i always find he contributes something worthwhile. i don't see how it could be so hard to get a person and direct them to chip in with off camera insights, so mc mahon is picking up sludden 5 minutes after throwing etc, maybe explain formations as they can be hard to make out some times over TV

Dessie and his "full court press" was bad but yesterday he referred to,I think Colm Cavanagh,as "playing in the pocket". The man needs to be reminded he's commentating on Gaelic football.

It is beyond painful listening to Carney and Dolan. Dolan seems to feel that he has to keep talking. It makes me mute the sound. Duignan's main contribution seems to be; 'I didn't see much in that' irrespective of how awful the tackle is (but then I seem to remember him using the hurl(ey) to strike more than the ball.

Dara O Cinneide, John Casey, Anthony Moyles would be good options for co commentators
