Yes barring a major injury. Look at his average compared to others.

If he doesn't pick up major injuries. 30 in November. If he gets 3 more years he'll be nearly there. Shefflin retired at 35 but Joe started earlier in senior. Shefflin 2 cruciates and a bad shoulder injury.

It looks very likely. He has scored a total of 72 points (1-69) in this year's championship to-date, with a game remaining obviously.
If he was to score at the same rate next year and have as many games, he'd be pretty much there.
We have had a couple of replays of course and also also reached the final. He's more likely to surpass it in the 2020 season.
He has the highest average per game of all of the top scorers, so it's a matter of time really barring any serious injuries.

If he stays injury free then there's no doubt he'll pass Henry's record . The most important thing is that he already holds the record for the highest average score per game .

Its only a matter of time and the hope that Canning doesn't suffer any long term injuries.
He's 29 years old, and probably has at least 5 years left in him. With his scoring average I expect him to overtake Shefflin and then a bit more. The extra games in the current format will help there as well

Couldn't care less. Top scorer charts are for the anoraks. The most important thing is that he wins his 2nd McCarthy Cup medal on Sunday week.

On that hurling series on RTE, I noted that a player lost an eye in the 1967 all-ireland final. There was footage of another astonishing 'tackle', where a player raised the sole of his boot to about knee level on an approaching attacking player. 'Manly stuff' in the sixties!!

He should have 2 or 3 years left I'd say.

A lot of top top players average out at about 16 years of intercounty career I notice, that's often 19 to 35 or so. That leaves JC another 5 years, after this one, 2008-2023. Joe may have other ideas that he's entitled to, of course.

Well if he plays 5 more years then he should pass Shefflin for sure. Interesting that only he and Dooley from Offaly are the only two in the top 10 not from one of the Big 3 counties.

5 years? I don't see him playing 5 more years but if he does he will be the all time top scorer in Hurling.

I do. He's still a top notch hurler and despite a few knocks he's still in decent shape.

What's also incredible is Nicky Rackard's goalscoring record. 59 in 36 games is ridiculous.
Tony Doran's 40 in 40 is also some achievement.
While the game has changed massively over time to one where goals are harder to come by, Rackard's goal record stands out even in comparison to the other greats of his own era like Christy Ring.

No doubt he will do it, The new structure has a lot more games. Galway have already played 8 games this year alone and still to play the final. I'm fairly sure in the past Kilkenny (Shefflin) would have won back to back All Irelands in 8 games.

More games will get him there faster in terms of years, but Joe's average per game is the also the highest, so he's on track to pass out Henry's total in less games.
