Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "Nothing incredible about the 19 total at all, when you consider 'the golden ticket' arrangement that saw Galway progress to a semi-final automatically quite a lot.

I'm too young myself!!, but my great granddad told me that Galway got good at hurling in 1975. From 1975-1996, Galway were remarkably presented with 22 opportunities to reach all-ireland hurling finals, by winning just one match. 7 of the 19 number, that you are so 'appalled' at, were lost in this 22 year spell. My great granddad always surmised that Galway wouldn't have lost even half of those 7 all irelands, if they'd had to come though a Leinster or Munster championship, or indeed the current championship structure, or any of the other 'back door' arrangements that existed for Galway teams in the 1997-2008 dozen seasons. They wouldn't have lost them, because they wouldn't have been in them, and if they were in them, they'd have had a better chance, because they'd have earned their spot.

I don't know anything about pre-1975 hurling, but I'd say Galway got a number of soft semi final tickets historically too, which no doubt contributed to swelling that number to n..n...n.....nineteen!! To say nothing of referees!!!!"
My great granddad would have agreed with your great granddad!

Maybe it will come in the next 2 episodes but would love to hear the voices of the hurling communities in places like Ballyduff ( Kerry), Tooreen ( Mayo), Four Roads ( Ros) , any of the clubs in the Ards penisula in Down. These are islands of hurling fanaticism full of natural hurlers and there are many more clubs /areas like them but there is a bit of a thing in hurling that unless you are from the traditional hurling areas , you cant really know about the game and your opinion is not worthy.

Replying To gilly2308:  "Makes it even worse though when you look at Galway, who have lost an incredible 19 finals since the very first All Ireland Hurling final. If they'd won even half of those, they'd easily be in fourth sport on their own. Instead they are stuck on a woeful five, and with no disrespect to Dublin, even they have more All Ireland hurling titles than Galway."
True but Galway strolled into semi finals for well over 110 years.

My disappointment with the "The Game" was its lack of contextual history. It was full of embarressing hyperbole about striking a sliotar and touching your soul........ yeah i get the thrill of striking the ball still do years after i stopped playing. I would have liked to have seen the geographic spread and how it is kept alive in islands and pockets around this island. Of course the central story is the All ireland and the rivalries. I get no sense of the fiery revolutionary zeal in the early 20th century. A beautifully shot magazine - its not a book, not even a good short story.
