Division 1B Hurling

Galway won the All-Ireland last year after a 1B campaign. Limerick have been in 1B for years and are now in the All-Ireland final. 1B appears to be a decent enough springboard for the championship?

Depends where your team is at. If you are like Limerick, 1B was perfect. Bunch of young lads, blood them. I think Wexford put too much emphasis on the league and were burnt out by the time the championship rolled around.
I hope we learn this lesson for next year.

Regardless, I think that it is going to have to be rejigged anyway with April being for clubs only. I think a straight forward division 1,2 etc with 6 teams in each is the way forward. Top two to final with winner promoted and bottom team relegated. There are two many weekends needed for the current format and it's being squeezed by colleges on one end and clubs on other.

Would agree, although I would slightly tweak that. Bottom relegated, top promoted, 2nd bottom plays 2nd top. Dont even bother with league final in my view, or else have top 2 in each division in league final like they used to.

There's something wrong when mid-ranked counties can cruise to the NHL QFs (even 4th in 1B, 10th ranked over all) without breaking a sweat - while the 1A teams play in an overly intense group where 5th fails to make the KO, and 6th goes down.

Time to merge the NHL top teams with the Prov and AIC. In 2018, the Prov Muns 5 had more bite than the Lein 5 group, and the format is only half baked.

Accordingly, let's implement the 'St Marys Clonmel' idea, albeit with 2 more teams (11 in all).
That's 11 teams playing 10 matches, 5 home/5 away, for 55 (non draw, no replay, play ET) matches in total. Of these 55, 4 all-Muns and 5 all-Lein pairings could 'double up' as Prov KO pairings. Prov QFs, SFs, Fs could be played in round-robin rds 2, 6, 10, respectively.
Spread the 11 group rds (incl bye) over say a 14-week period, to allow each team 4 weekends off.

Top 6 to AI KO - top 2 to SFs; other 4 to QFs
(3v6, 4v5). Play AI QFs, SFs, F in weeks 15, 17, 19.
Prov Champs do not automatically qualify - they need to strive for a good 10-match record.
SF1 has 1st v weaker placed of the 2 QF winners.

This has everything - all teams play a blend of stronger/weaker/inter/intra Prov group opponents; and the Provs revert to KO along with AIC.

You have to have a league final, there's been some classics in recent years. Prefect appetizer for the championship.

There would be great hurling already with 'all v all' - give the NHL trophy to 1st on the ladder - and bring on the AIC KO.

Yeah it's interesting, if galway beat Clare it will be an all 1B final.
