Indeed and we do envy their five titles. Mind you their population is, give or take, 20000 more than ours, which when put into perspective, is two thirds the population of Leitrim, half the population of Longford or one third the population of Monaghan. Speaking of Monaghan they are putting some of the more densely populated counties to shame by being consistently competitive. Then of course it's easy enough to overlook the difference as 20000 is not much more than a middling sized estate in some parts.

Indeed although Kerry, with just 17,000 more in population than Mayo, has 33% more AI titles than the most pooulous county in the country. So perhaps the pooulation delta is a convenient excuse for underperforming counties in some cases.

The contradiction there is probably lost on you though.

Replying To jimbodub:  "There are some wise heads on this site regarding historical GAA stats.

In my limited capacity on that front I have the following stat down as the greatest unbeaten run in Championship history:

Wexford 1915-1918 = 20 Championship games unbeaten

Now I could be wrong there. If I am fair enough!

But if I'm not wrong..

Then I'm somewhat sure that Dublin from 2015-2018 exactly 100 years later.. have now beaten the previous record held by Wexford.

Including drawn games I think Dublin now stands at 24 games unbeaten across the Championship.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. I've done zero research."
I think the Dubs are 28 games unbeaten in the championship.

Mental.

Incredible team. The greatest ive seen. Not sure ill see a better one in my lifetime (im 26)"
I was thinking you were a young fella and you hadn't seen much.
Bit to go to match O Dwyer who built a couple of great Kerry teams over an 11 year period.
Yes the present Dublin side are good but their 74/78 side were equally as good despite coming up against the greatest team I ever say. And when I say greatest team I also mean some of the greatest individual footballers ever to play the game .
JackO, P o Shea, Spillane, Sheehy, Egan, Power, O Keefe.
Have a look on YouTube youngfella after you have taken the blinkers off!!

Kerry are a freak of nature and as you say contradict the theory that success is purely based on population. However if you look at the five least populated counties, none of them have ever won an All Ireland. Also the All Ireland roll of honour, apart from Kerry, is dominated by counties with large populations, namely Dublin, Cork, Galway, Down and Meath. Cavan and Wexford bucked the trend for a while but they haven't won an All Ireland since 1952 and 1918 respectively. Antrim of course should have a nine or ten All Irelands all things being equal but they have had their own problems over the years. In my own county the two towns with the biggest population have between them won 67 of the 116 county senior football titles played for. The other 49 titles were divided among 16 clubs. Of course there are exceptions as a so called "golden generation"can come along every so often in one of the smaller counties or clubs but they are a rarity and these golden generations come along much oftener when you have huge numbers to pick from. You are right in saying there are underperforming counties out there, so called sleeping giants, but you will find if a big county and a small county both get their act together the big county will generally come out on top. Unless you're talking about Kerry and that's where I came in.
