6 County Leinster Club Championship?

(Oldest Posts First)

I heard on The Sunday Game recently that Carlow has only 4 Senior Hurling teams.

Carlow, Westmeath Laois, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow are doing the best they can. Would it be feasible for these 6 counties to work together in terms of a combined club championship?

In Meath there are 12 clubs in the senior championship which is probably quiet big considering our standing at intercounty level at present.

Any potential Leinster club championship would not facilitate all these clubs and some would be left out. For that reason I couldn't see Meath being involved. Good idea in principle though.

carlow already play in kilkenny league.
i have however long reckoned the key to getting better at county level is a competeitive club championship, that proposal would help that happen.

The travel would be too much, the 4 senior clubs in Carlow are all south in the mount Leinster area, the most obvious choice for them would be Kilkenny or Wexford now they do play Kilkenny league but it's junior league without the possibility of promotion which while it fulfills the need for games it doesn't really offer any chance to improve. How the county team is doing so well ATM is a bit of an anomaly as only a few years ago we had a 7 team shc now reduced to 4 this year. Even joining up laois Carlow and Kildare would not be without considerable travel as the majority of hurling is played on the opposite side of each county. Something does need to be done though as hurling is in danger of dying out in some counties.

Why is the senior championship so small? Is the top 4 just too far ahead of the rest?

That's a good question, yes I would say two clubs in particular are considerably stronger ATM mount Leinster rangers and st Mullins then naomh Eoin and ballinkillen would be maybe a slight bit of them although naomh Eoin would dispute that but recent county titles would say otherwise. Bagenalstown seem to be pushing the football a bit more these days and that has hit the hurling and naomh brid which was an area team to start with seems to have some internal issues, the intention was for a 6 team championship but the latter two withdrew, Carlow town has been intermediate for the best part of ten years and no sign of that changing although they have a few good underage teams coming up but will these lads dual once they hit senior I doubt it. Tullow which would be the second town has a junior hurling team I think palatine likwise, taking out the recent success of the county team hurling is not in good shape in Carlow.
