It is sad to see such a great character as Derek McGrath step away from his position as manager of the Waterford Senior Hurling team. He represents all that is true and fair about our great and sacred game. Like many who have gone before him, his work will only truly be recognised and felt in his absence. He comes across as a very decent, honest man who cares for his players and loves the game of hurling. His retirement is hurling's loss so hopefully he'll be back in some shape or form. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3097 - 19/06/2018 14:17:17 2113066 Link 0 |
And they weren't far away. Only lost the final by a puck of the ball against a team who put a near perfect final performance together - only 6 wides and 1 missed free the whole game. Miami305 (Galway) - Posts: 147 - 19/06/2018 14:56:26 2113086 Link 0 |

The last Derek probable wants right now is another job. However Waterford would be stupid to let such a talent slip away. Make hime Director of hurling for Waterford but give him a team of people to share the work load so he can work his job and have family time. May be Brick and some more respected people. He is a class act. Unfortunately the hurling traditionalists will never let him get the praise he deserves. LohansRedHelmet (Clare) - Posts: 2432 - 20/06/2018 05:30:38 2113255 Link 0 |
Best of luck to Derek. He has been a great manager for Waterford. PortInFaithful (Offaly) - Posts: 472 - 20/06/2018 13:01:52 2113334 Link 0 |
He seems to have had the man management down to a T and that takes some doing in Waterford. Enjoy the retirement Derek , you deserve it but the hurling landscape will be a poorer place without him and Waterford on the whole. bricktop (Down) - Posts: 2503 - 20/06/2018 13:29:47 2113342 Link 0 |

He took over a team in serious decline. The question I would ask when considering if a manager was good/great is, "did he get the most out of the players at his disposal?" I think he did fair good. I dont think you cant map high performance with Silverware. If that was the case, Brian Cody could win All-Ireland's with Westmeath Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1410 - 21/06/2018 22:08:06 2113655 Link 0 |
