Can't you see/understand that there is a developmental aspect to these structures which surely is a good thing. The McDonagh Cup has been a great competition with most games being very close and fiercely competitive. Carlow have never had a succession of such intensive matches and at the right time of year as well. If the incentive of automatic promotion for the winners and also the back door entry to McCarthy Cup for the finalists wasn't there I have no doubt the McDonagh Cup wouldn't have been the success it has been. Every county in it has raised their game and are better for it. That helps equip the winners to take the step up next year. At the moment there are only 9 counties truly competitive in the Mccarthy Cup. This structure could quite conceivably see that rise to 12 in less than 5 years. It received big support at congress. It's a massive opportunity for these counties to get a high profile home game. Congress had already agreed to exclude 4th and 5th from the provinces. The motion that passed was then inclusive of the top two in the McDonagh Cup. It was the first time that congress properly held out an olive branch to this middle tier. The Hurling Development Committee were very supportive of it.

The football community were over the moon when Fermanagh beat Monaghan, Giving the two finalists in the JMcD Cup a chance to replicate Fermanagh's win is much better than giving Tipp another chance to kick start their season.

Yeah he was from Cork. Clever guy too, an accountant too. Alot of people not into GAA don't know much about other counties especially small ones. Shur Cork is practically a country of its own. I always had a huge interest in hurling and Geography so it was so shocking and funny at the same time. He reckoned Carlow was a town in Kildare but was shocked to find out it was a county.. Given the (current) competitiveness of Munster (where all 5 can beat each other) compared to Leinsters situation, the winners of the Joe McDonagh Cup should have played 3rd place team in Leinster, with the runner up getting the 3rd place team from Munster.

Wexford would be as tough a game, if not tougher, than Clare or Cork.

I'm not so sure. Id like to say yes as I was hoping Wexford were on the rise and would progress this year... but based on Wexford's last two championship performances against Galway, they lost both games by 9 points, against the All-Ireland champions, which is a good yard stick. In Munster by comparison, the two teams who haven't even come in the top 3, Tipp and Waterford, lost their games to Galway by 1 and 3 points respectively.

But Tipp and Waterford have both fallen way back this year! Wexford haven't made the progress many thought they would, but they're no worse than they were last year. They'll beat whoever they meet in the preliminary 1/4 final (as will the Munster 3rd place team) so it's a bit of a moot point. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5010 - 12/06/2018 18:02:17 2110653 Link 0 |
There has been a bit of comment in the print media about the lack of tv coverage for the McDonagh Cup. It's a new competition. It will take time to become established. It's only the first year of three for this trial period. It'll take a shock result by a McDonagh Cup finalist against a provincial third placed team to give the competition a real boost. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7822 - 12/06/2018 19:20:17 2110688 Link 0 |
Yeah agree, moot point. Wexford and third place in Munster will beat whichever MacDonagh team they meet. Galway are ahead of the bunch as of now and you could throw a blanket over Cork/Clare/Limerick/Wexford/Kilkenny. county man (Limerick) - Posts: 1102 - 12/06/2018 22:59:49 2110818 Link 0 |
There's a lot of negativity about the Mcdonagh cup from one particular county on here. Is that a bit of insecurity????. They certainly didn't like it much when we beat their minors three years ago.

You're probably talking about Wexford and two years ago Westmeath would have put it up to them, but Wexford have improved significantly in the last 2 years whereas Westmeath haven't. It would be a huge shock if Westmeath or Carlow beat Wexford now. county man (Limerick) - Posts: 1102 - 13/06/2018 21:39:33 2111278 Link 0 |
Carlow, Westmeath, Kerry etc. have to start claiming big scalps to get more recognition and attention. The Ireland cricket team made headlines on the park through results and performances. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7822 - 13/06/2018 23:16:56 2111341 Link 0 |
With both 4ths in - why play the groups at all ?

Both deserve their chance but would expect comfortable enough victories for Limerick & Wexford county man (Limerick) - Posts: 1102 - 01/07/2018 20:33:20 2117380 Link 0 |
well they did in 2015,8 points winning margin, but i think wexford have improved since then even. i hope we can get the win and bring on the banner. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 02/07/2018 11:12:54 2117592 Link 0 |
Waterford or Tipperary even with their below performances this year would beat Wexford if they met. Wexford have reached a plateau. These Wexford guys are talented but they aren't at the same level of talent as Munster teams. Let's take the Under 21. Wexford won 3 in a row in Leinster and were tanked every year in the All Ireland under 21 series.
