Respect For Minors

(Oldest Posts First)

So I happened to be in Drogheda this evening, and went to see the Louth Meath Minot game. Please note I had absolutely no skin in this game, but on a pleasant evening, going to an inter county game seemed like a nice way to spend an hour or so. Fairly balanced game in the first half but Meath really pulled away in the second have. What was notable to me was not the quality of either side, but the jeers from the Meath fans in the stand, when the young Louth lads took frees. One young lad missed a free for the Louth side, again the jeers from the Meath support. This was at a point in the game when Meath were well ahead, so I dont understand why this abuse was necessary from the adults watching essentially children playing a game for their county. These are on average 16 year old boys - a vulnerable age of uncertainty, and yet adults felt it appropriate to act in such a despicable manner. For the sake of our youth & for the dignity of the game we love, please think of your impact on these young people as you jeer from the sidelines. Respect our players & respect our game.

Think the Meath jeers on this occasion were not for the player who missed the free but rather for the referee who appeared to hand Louth a number of easy frees, especially this one. By the way, the big win flattered Meath and Louth also had some outstanding young players on view.

I hate the disrespect for opposition at every level. I love passionate, vocal support (the game would be nothing without it and I will be as noisy as anybody in Wexford Park on Saturday evening), but I detest cheering wides, booing players, etc.
As a supporter, you are representing your county and people. Respect for yourself, respect the opposition.

You always have idiots. Some parents of underage players would want to take a look in the mirror. That's at club level, some of the stuff you'd hear them come out with would make you want to flatten them

Not surprising. When its acceptable at older levels then it will trickle down to age grade level. same in any sport. needs to change at the top to have any effect on the bottom

Not sure that the young players involved would have understood this nuance .....
