Meath V Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If Meath did beat Tyrone it would be a massive result for Meath football and leinster football in general Why?

1 If Meath were to beat Tyrone it would Meath biggest win in the championship since the 5 goal hammering of Dublin in 2010 or Mayo in 2009. Meaths best result in this decade and in last 10 years.

2 If Meath were to beat Tyrone it would be one of the best victories for leinster team outide Dublin outside the provience in the championship in nearly two decades.

Why? In this decade only 1 team in leinster besides Dublin have beaten a top division 1 team , a top 5 or 6 team in the country and that was longford beating Monaghan in 2016. Since 2000 only 4 times have leinster teams outside Dublin have beaten top division 1 teams in the championship outside the provience. Those victories v top division 1 teams since 2000 are Meath v kerry in 2001, Meath v Tyrone in 2007, Laois v Tyrone in 2004 and longford v Monaghan in 2016. Thats it. Meath did beat Galway in the championship in 07 and 11 but Galway in 07 and 11 were not a top division 1 team. Meath defeated Mayo in 2009 and longford defeated Mayo in 2010 in the championship but Mayo were in transition and the current Mayo team didnt take off til 2011 2012.

The fact is outside Dublin leinster teams have only beaten top opposition (division 1 top 5 or 6 teams outside leinster ) 4 times in near two decades. A Meath victory v Tyrone would be the fifth victory in 18 years. Tyrone are a top 8 team and in every ranking I have seen in the internet or papers in the last 3 years they have been in the top 4 or 5 teams in the country. They are double Ulster champions so a Meath victory would be significant for Meath football but also a very significant result for leinster football.

Tyrone are still a very good side and I fully expect them to win this and end up in the Super 8's if they avoid Monaghan and Mayo (be a 50/50 game against these sides). Meath just can't seem to get it together but maybe they have a big game in them, still fancy Tyrone though.

I see this game is live on Sky Sports which is great news.

don't see us winning this one to be honest based on the longford game , although you never know , we aren't as bad that game suggests but we will really need to get a performance we have not seen since beating the dubs back in 2010 or Mayo 2009 , it's that long since we have beaten a decent team which in itself says it all, underage is improving though as this years results would suggest so not all doom and gloom for the future

Looking forward to going to this game. As far as Tyrone are concerned Meath are still a big fish and a 50/50 sudden death championship clash in Navan should bring out the best in them. Over the years Tyrone have always given respect to playing in the backdoor and a good win against Meath would get the show back on the road.

Good point JR Iarmhi
Sorry about that I forgot Westmeath beating Mayo in 01. So that brings it up to 5 wins for leinster teams v top divsion 1 teams/ top 5 or 6 team outside Dublin since 2000. Mayo team had won 3 Connacht titles and in 01 Mayo won the national league division 1 title, only their second div 1 title in 70 years. Mayo would have been in top 5 or 6 in the country in 01.

Meath beat Galway in 07. Galway in 2007 were div 1 team team and topped div 1 in 2007 and won Connacht in 08. But Galway werent in the top 5 or 6 teams in the country .Galway declined badly after been beaten by Antrim and nearly beaten by Waterford. Galway couldnt win a game in the qualifiers or Croker in 00s after 01.

Along with longford beating Monaghan in 16, the only other victory of leinster team of div 1 opposition in this decade outside leinster besides Dublin was kildare beating Cork in 15. Kildare were brillant that day with Niall kelly giving an exhibition of centre forward play. But Cork were not a top team like Monaghan now they were more like Galway in 07.

Cork did reach league final in 2015 but were hammered by Dublin. Cork havent won a Munster title in 6 years , Cork are 3 years in div 2, uncompetitive v kerry for years and for the first time in generations outside the top teams in the country. Cork are having the worst period in the last few years since 50s. Cork are now somewhere between top 10 and 15 teams. That is unprecedented. In late 60s and 70s early 80s Cork were in the top 3 or 4 teams in the country. In the late 80s early 90s Cork were in the top 2. In late 90s Cork were in top 5 or 6 teams. In the 00s Cork were in the top 5 or 6 team til 2012. Since 2012 Cork have dropped slowly out of the top 6 , then 8 and out of top ten. Cork have been out of the top ten for the last 3 or so years. That hasnt happened since the 50s.

So a new list of victories are

1 Meath beating kerry reigning All Ireland champions in 01,
2 Westmeath beating Mayo 3 times Connacht champions and reigning national league div 1 title in 2000,
3 Laois beating Tyrone reigning All Ireland champions in 2004,
4 Meath beating Tyrone 3 times All Ireland winners in 2007 and
5 Longford beating Monaghan , two times Ulster champions and between 2013 and 2018 Monaghan havent been outside top 5 or 6 teams in the country.

So since 2000 they are the only victories by leinster teams besides Dublin v top divsion 1 / top 5 or 6 team outside the provience since then.
Meath beating Tyrone would join that list. In that this Tyrone team is one of the most sucessful Tyrone teams ever. Only the 80s 90s and 00s teams have been more sucessful. They are double Ulster champions. And for the last 3 years have been in the top 5 or 6 teams in the country.

I got the year wrong about Laois beating Tyrone. Tyrone hammered laois in 2004. I got the year wrong. Laois defeated Tyrone in the championship in 2006 not 2004. In 2006 in round 2 of the qualifiers in Portlaoise in the championship Result Laois 0-9 Tyrone 0-6.

That was a very good laois team, won leinter in 03, went to replay v Westmeath in 04 and lost to Dublin unluckily in 05 leinster final, lost by a last second point from Caffreys Dubs.

Laois reached the quarter final in 06 and lost to Mayo. That was the end of that very good laois team. Players from the sucessful underage team in late 90s . Laois reached 3 minor All Ireland final between 96 and 98 winning 2 in a row and reached under 21 final in 98. Up to kerrys recent sucess at minor that Laois team was the most dominant crop at minor level for 20 years.

At senior laois reached 3 leinster finals in 00s winning 1 with one of the best exhibition of forward play I have ever seen a leinster final. Theyre probaly was more in that laois team. Good enough to reach an All Ireland final with the forwards they had and probaly good enough to win Sam. They won 1 Leinster title, two other leinster final appearances and three All-Ireland quarter-final berths and reached national league division 1 final in 2003 all in in four years

They will need to be very poor if Meath are to get over this one. There has been nothing in recent times to suggest we are capable of an upset here. Midfield has been a disaster for us over last few years and lack of any clear game plan all point to Tyrone. However, they are missing 3 lads and we are at home and when gun was put to lads head to maintain division two status they did enough to survive. So going more in hope than expectation.

They are missing 3 lads we are missing 16 players who played in last year league and 11 players who played in last years championship. So I think we are down more players then Tyrone. Tyrone have the most settled panel in the country. Only 4 players who were on the Tyrone panel in 2017 did not return this year. Derry have had 19 non returnees, Cork 18, Meath and Offaly 16, While Down Derry Sligo Armagh Limerick basically nearly every team in div 2 3 or 4 have players missing for different reasons.

But just like Cork Down Derry Offaly Sligo Antrim Galway Westhmeath Armagh , Meath are just another one of these counties where players are no longer commiting to inter county game. Players are leaving panel from Derry to Cork from Antrim to Wexford . Even 4 players have left the Dubs panel since the league, But the Dubs have resources to take that. After the club final Corofin v Nemo. 8 players were called up to Galway and Cork panels. Only 3 agreed to join up. It says allot when the top club players in Ireland wouldnt commit inter county.
We did beat Galway drew with Roscommon in Roscommon and lost by 1 point to Donegal in the last year, all top 8 teams. We hammered Clare by an agrregate of 26 points in 2 games. And also hammered Down by 9 points and Fermanagh ( team of the moment) by 15 points in the last year.
Since we lost leinster semi final last summer, kildare have lost 12 games and had no wins, we have had 7 victories and 1 draw . We arent as bad as people make out. We have allot of problems and issues. And its very unlikely we will win on Sat.

But if we defeated Tyrone and its a big if, it would be our biggest win in the championship in nearly a decade and one of the best victories by leinster team outside Dublin in the championship in nearly 20 years. It would blow out of the water the arguement and believe that Meath are average, and it would blow out of the water the believe that Meath have not improved. If Mcentee could defeat one of the most sucessful Tyrone teams ever, a team in the top 5 teams in the country in the last 3 years, then the idea that he hasnt improved would be completely wrong. And if he does it with so many players not available it makes the achievement even better and very impressive one.

Again this is just my opinion, I could be right , i could be wrong. But what is factual and we can say for certain is as I said only 5 leinster teams since 2000 have beaten top div 1 oppostion top 5 or 6 team outside leinster besides the Dubs. A win on saturday would be a standout result for leinster football not just Meath football. Leinster teams since 2000 besides Dublin rarely beat the top teams inside or outside the provience

I can't wait till the inevitable happens, end of this slump in meath football, and we are back challenging year on year again.this isn't speculation it's fact.... It's cyclical and believe you me meath have very much got their house in order at underage...grant it 10/15 years later then they should have. But when we are back itll be to win leinsters and all irelands.....not just yoyo between div1 and 2 like the mighty rossies.....pick up the odd win against a big connaught team that took their eye off the ball like the mighty rossies.....talking themselves up as a consistant super 8 team when really the dog on the street knows roscommon are a traditional also ran with a fairly pathetic history and when this half decent team you have now are gone .....my prediction is div 2 and 3 probably for our lifetimes. So enjoy you quarter final draws as being the highlight of roscommon GAA.

Two things. Firstly Roscommon aren't going to be out until Sunday not Saturday, secondly you still have one more game before the bus is parked for it's anual extended holiday.

You wont get peace. He will still be on prasing and defending Andy McEntee who in his eyes is one of best managers in Ireland. It will be all Mick O'Dowds fault despite the team getting worse the longer they are under the messiah Andy

RoyalDunne doesnt represent the vast majority of Meath supporters. We are realistic enough to know we're in a bad place at the moment and have indeed gone backwards under Andy Mc. However, things are looking up at underage level and we should be back competing on a consistent basis at adult level in the next 5/6 years.

Meath showing great progress this year, having survived and consolidated they're position in Division 2 and running Longford close up in Pearse Park. Encouraging signs under McEntee so they'll be going into this game in fine form and raring to go.

Tyrone will be bridge too far though you'd imagine but but in a credible performance and we can say then that things are certainly looking up for the Royals.

I think Meath will do to Tyrone what Fermanagh done to Monaghan's future! The redhanders is a team of some promising players but as recently retired county player, Cavanagh states clearly that the team is being managed ineffectively by a yesterday's type manager that is too set in his ways.
