Stewarding (Omagh)

(Oldest Posts First)

So with no seated tickets available either online or through my club for the Monaghan/Tyrone game, I was forced to slum it on the terraces.

We arrived early and enjoyed a very entertaining minor match. We were standing behind the first barrier at the sideline with a great view of the action. In front of us was a 2M walkway and then the fence surrounding the picth. Througout the minor match, stewards were active in clearing adults who took up position just inside the fece. The clear and sensible policy was that kids could stand there, but adults had to move on as they were blocking the view of people on the lower steps of the terraces.

Howver, as the ground filled, more and more adults congregated there until it was 2x deep. For a critical 15 minutes, no stewards passed by adn the problem got out of control. Before the senior match throw-in, a senior steward passed by and remined one of his minions of the ploicy and that all adults needed to be cleared. This particular steward threw his eyes to heaven and did nothing.

It didn't bother me too much as I'm fortunate enough to be tall enough to see over. However, there were several persons of shorter stature around me who'd arrived early to get good positions and were now frustrated by the late arrivers who showed no care for their fellow patrons. A coupleof these people called over rolly-eyes guy and politely asked if people could be moved on. A lengthy (amicable) conversation ensued and, eventually, he asked some people to move. With the match about to start, he got short shrift and nothing changed.

I really felt for the famalies with small kids who'd been moved earlier. They arrived earlier, took up poisiton by the fence but were moved on, only to see it suddently become acceptable to stand there a few minutes later. There was plenty of room on the terraces themselves around where I was and even some empy areas behind the goals, so it's not like there was nowhere for people to move to.

It's a trivial enough issue and I couldn't see any safety implications. It was, however, a comfort issue and I'm sure it adversly affected some peoples enjoyment of the game. If there's a policy there, it should be enforced equally for everyone, throughout the event.

The traffic management was woeful. We didn't move an inch for over an hour. I think the SF is gonna be there too. Disgrace if it is. As its Fermanagh and Monaghan I would say Clones (obvs) or Breffini park.

Feel for the steward.. Impossible job really .. How is one fella meant to move dozens of adults on his own if they refused which you say the latecomers did. not rolly eyes guy in fairness .. This is part of life on a terrace ... Sometimes you just have to move yourself or just deal with the obstruction of taller people in front of you. now I'm not saying that's right but what are stewards suppose to do ? Get the measuring tape on and make sure everyone medium-tall in height stand at the back and the smaller people stand at the front ? Can't do that like. From my own experience if you ask someone to move they will do and apologise for getting in your way

I agree with you there. However, from what I observed yesterday, they were doing a great job of managing it up to the point where they let it lapse for about 15 mins and then it got out of control and there was no way they were going to get it back.

Also...the traffic management leaving Omagh was a joke and nearly vomited when i heard thats where the semi final is being played...surely someone with a brain can change this,Nothing wrong with Omagh as a venue but there is no kinda half quickish way out of it.Its the worst in Ulster to get out off.Id love to hear someone from the Ulster council try to justify playing the semi final there.

It's like anywhere else know the back roads and it's no problem, take the "Google Maps" route and you can expect to sit in traffic - should that be more Smithborough to Clones or in days gone by the M1 to Casement Park - God bless its soul!

Lazy from steward to not move people through the game and not do his job. Could a supervisor/other steward not have been called to do something?

Not that impossible. You simply ask politely and use other stewards/supervisor if necessary.
