Two Different Sets Of Rules

(Oldest Posts First)

Diarmuid O'Connor receives a straight red card for an elbow on Paul Conroy last weekend.

John Conlon commits a very similar offence on Daniel Kearney today and walks away with just a yellow card. I'm not sure if the referee even awarded a foul for Conlon's challenge. The linesman pulled him up on it afterwards.

Two different sets of rules for football and hurling it seems.

It's almost like they're different sports.

They ARE different sports. I'm in agreement with the hurling panellists today -- I think the referee got it right.

Leave hurling alone. That's the way we want it played. If you want Gaelic Football to turn into soccer ye are heading the right way. We want the hits..a bad elbow by Conlon got punished. It's a man's game and there is going to be collateral damage.

To strike or attempt to strike an opponent with head, arm, elbow, hand or knee is a red card in hurling. Same as in football.

Peter Harte made no attempt to tackle the ball. It was a clear and blatant kidney punch. Straight red all day.

Very different challenges lads. Diarmuid O'Connor saw Conroy coming for about 10 metres and went straight for him with the elbow. A shocking challenge. Has a suspension been handed out? Surely he will miss the rest of the summer?

The hurling challenge I felt Conlon turned into it and didn't line up Kearney in the premeditated way O'Connor did. It could still have been a red card, but wasn't the shocker O'Connor's was.

You're obviously biased or simply don't know the rules.

That should read,

The act committed by Peter Harte which warranted his red card was scandalous

Both of the were deliberate and deserved reds. Id say it will only be 1 game for each which is the punishment for striking

No attempt to dislodge the ball, just an attempt to punch an opponent.

He isn't that bad a tackler that that could be in any way conceivably thought of as a legitimate attempt to play the ball.

He punched someone, red card all day long.

Are you the guy that's a ref, you must be blind or else your blinded by tribalism as usually happens in Gaa. Peter Harte is one of my favourite Gaelic footballers but his punch to the kidneys was a very cheap & cynical act. Anyone who condones that shouldn't be involved in Gaelic games.

The amount of tackles with the fist that goes unpunished is scandlous. The rule is clear, the tackle has to be with the open hand and on the ball. I didn't see the incident in question with Harte but about time it was called. Attempting to tackle with the fist is a free' doesn't matter if contact is made with the ball or not. We all know what they're called "A Softner" and more than likely we all have given and recieved them. Time now to cut them out. It will help to open up the game, getting rid of the swarm tackle will also help.
