I love it when a team has won the All Ireland for the very first like Donegal in 1992, Derry in 1993, Armagh in 2002 and Tyrone in 2003 or a team that has not won it decades like Down in 1991 or Galway in 1998. If I had to choose one I would pick Armagh in 2002. The previous three years they were beaten by the eventual All Ireland Champions. In 1999 they were beaten by Meath in the All Ireland semi-final. In 2000 they were beaten in extra-time by Kerry in an All Ireland semi-final replay. In 2001 they were beaten by Galway in the qualifiers. In 2002 they eventual won the Holy Grail when they beat Kerry for the first and only time in the Championship. That Armagh team should of won more All Irelands. Wow, but how time can change a lot of opinions. Im surprised to see so many going for Clare in the 90's. I thought we were hated by 1998 like no other. ZUL10 (Clare) - Posts: 693 - 17/04/2018 18:24:48 2093640 Link 0 |
Have a soft spot for Offaly and their All Ireland win in 82, getting through Leinster then was tough as old boots, beat Dublin who won it in 83, Galway in the Semi final on the tough side of the semi draw and who were in the final the following year, then ending the Kerry dream of five in a row when the whole country had written them off. Tremendous achievement. A real All Ireland if ever there was one. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 17/04/2018 19:23:25 2093648 Link 0 |
Once you win the public want a new team. Remember the goodwill towards Armagh in 2003...it was gone by 2004 and most were delighted to see Fermanagh boot them out the following year.

Armagh 2002, having a new winner and the scenes afterwards was incredible. Pity they couldn't win another one or two, they was a terrific side Hill16Army (Dublin) - Posts: 88 - 17/04/2018 21:02:05 2093666 Link 0 |

Although they fell short I loved the Down team of 2010. Typical Down team full of verve and divilment. Coulter, Hughes, Poland, big Dan Gordon and the orchestrator in chief Marty Clarke. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9116 - 19/04/2018 10:51:53 2093915 Link 1 |
Despite the deliberate and highly self serving agenda to blacken Tyrone's achievements across all forms of media by prominent ex footballers Tyrone were indeed a great side when playing their best football and brought a new dimension to football Especially the year they won their treble! Brilliant achievement. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 19/04/2018 12:13:37 2093937 Link 1 |

Won 4 Leagues on the bounce Unfortunately the back door wasn't kind to them. Any other decade and time frame and they'd have won at least 1 more jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 19/04/2018 12:34:16 2093943 Link 1 |
They were a brilliant team, and all that considering they came from a hurling province but they were unlucky they came up against a serious Kerry team.

They were very good alright but they didn't have any really top forwards who'd you'd consider to be great players of their era like Armagh who like Cork only won 1 All Ireland. They could easily have fallen at the final hurdle against Down too. Their performances against Kerry in 07 & 09 really disappointed me. From the teams since the late 80's who only won 1 All Ireland I'd consider Armagh the team closest to winning a second title. JDF (Galway) - Posts: 322 - 19/04/2018 13:44:29 2093959 Link 0 |
You have to give Tyrone plenty of credit, only 5 players that started in 03 started the final in 08. Thats some going. Look at the bench in 08 though, O'Neil, Brian McGuigan & & Mulligan all came on; That some serious talent. Don't think their was a lot to choose between the Armagh & Tyrone teams of that generations, but the gap is huge in terms of All Ireland's. I do think if Armagh had won it a few years earlier then they's have won another, think they lost to the winners in 99,00 & 01. JDF (Galway) - Posts: 322 - 19/04/2018 13:50:20 2093960 Link 1 |
Really surprised to see so many people going for the Tyrone team of the 00's. lambofgod (Mayo) - Posts: 116 - 19/04/2018 13:52:53 2093961 Link 0 |
Cork were a very good team but only 1 AI and even at that they fell over the line and then that was the end of them Similar to the 90's Dubs team. They both lacked a bit of belief but managed to squeeze out a win against a lesser side They were unlucky with the back door nonsense though... jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 19/04/2018 14:04:05 2093962 Link 1 |
Has to be Donegal 2012 for me. DannyMcA (Dublin) - Posts: 260 - 19/04/2018 14:12:55 2093966 Link 1 |
Yeah a very good side but not a great side. Tyrone had what it took to beat Kerry when it mattered (repeatedly) Lacked some quality and were a bit weak when it really mattered, but I admired their never say die approach until they eventually got over the line and 2010 it came together in what was another treble winning season wasn't it? Was happy for them considering their consistency and it deserved to be awarded But they won't go down as a great side and I can see the Donegal side that followed a year later having a longer lasting legacy jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 19/04/2018 14:37:33 2093971 Link 1 |
Offaly in 1994. Those lads were just born to hurl. They had everything right. Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 19/04/2018 14:38:07 2093972 Link 0 |
The football they played that year can only go down as great. Right up there with the football Dublin has played across the 10's The greatest Donegal side of all time. Beat everyone.. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 19/04/2018 14:46:06 2093974 Link 1 |
