I would change it to 5 cheers, why stop at 3? Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 09/04/2018 15:33:36 2091872 Link 0 |
As if players did not have enough to deal with. No need for speeches at all Ashrules (Dublin) - Posts: 518 - 09/04/2018 15:52:23 2091879 Link 0 |
The Leix captain didn't give three cheers to Carlow and I was surprised to hear one or two mentioning it immediately afterwards. As he made the speech I was cringing in anticipation he'd get to it at the end but fair play to him didn't subject us to that. Coming from Leix that would've been just too much. Thanking the opposition for a good game and wishing them well is sufficient. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1412 - 09/04/2018 16:39:57 2091892 Link 0 |

It's the preamble before the three cheers that's as cringeworthy; "I'd like to tank (insert losing team here) for a tough hard game. Ye're a great team, ye pushed us all the way. We know what it's like to be on the losing side in a final and it's not nice, but I'm sure ye'll be back again next year. Tree cheers for (insert losing team here); hip hip (hooray)......" ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 10/04/2018 04:25:10 2091989 Link 0 |
agree, why not give 5 cheers for the opposition supporters and management while you are at it?

It's time to end the speeches. It's not like there's a dearth of them. For an All-Ireland win, they'll be speeches that night in the hotel, the following day at the homecoming and at every crossroads where the cup is paraded. It's over 20 years since Anthony Daly's "Whipping Boys" line. That's 20 years of a lot of forgettable speeches, and it wasn't like there was a golden age beforehand.

I'd say the speech made by David Burke last year when collecting the Liam McCarthy meant an awful lot to many people, especially the family and friends of a couple of former players no longer with us. What is the harm in letting it continue, most are soon forgotten and it's usually only those who stay behind and want to hear them that have to listen to them anyway. If a captain doesn't want to make one he is free to just lift the cup and walk away. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 10/04/2018 14:43:48 2092113 Link 0 |
If Wexford win an All-Ireland, I will be wanting the cup presented, about 2-3 laps of honour, and a rack of pints lined up. No need to stand there listening to anybody thanking the physio and the statistician. Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 10/04/2018 14:45:43 2092114 Link 0 |
so you'd rather they thank you with their lap of honour over people that actually helped the team 4-5 days a week? Bit small minded dont you think? tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 10/04/2018 14:48:33 2092115 Link 0 |
They can thank him personally if they want. Also do not forget that these people are often getting well rewarded for helping the team 4-5 days a week. The thanking of the entire entourage has made speeches even worse than they were. Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 10/04/2018 16:12:25 2092150 Link 0 |
