Man Of The Match On The Losing Team

(Oldest Posts First)

Does it happen often? I seem to remember the man of the match of the 1994 All-Ireland football semi-final between Leitrim and Dublin being Declan Darcy (who coincidentally went on to play for Dublin in later years). Am I wrong? And either way, are players on the losing team ever honoured with the Man of the Match award?

I could be wrong, but I'm nearly sure that Galway half back Padraig Kelly got MOTM in the 1993 All Ireland hurling final?

Eamonn McAuley was man of the match for Louth in the Leinster final in 2010.

Leitrim full back Seamus Quinn got Man of the match that day. Got an all star that year too.

Ronan O'Toole from St. Lomans got Man of the match in the Leinster club final before chistmas although that was announced by TG4 when time was just up and Lomans lead by 4. Moorefields late rally saw them win and there was no sign of O'Toole and no mention of the man of the match at the final whistle.

Ronan O'Toole of St. Lomans got man if the match in the club Leinster final. When announced Lomans were leading by six points. Had it been left to end of game I've a feeling Roli Sweeney might have sneaked it.

Leitrim only got 1 all star that year. Strange I thought

Ger Pierson of Gowna got MOTM in the Cavan championship final a number of years ago.

Himself and Seanie Johnson shot the lights out that day and Cavan Gaels won by a point or two. But Pierson got the award.

I'm pretty there's a few but I honestly can't recall off the top of my head. Bernard Brogan got POTY in 2010 without reaching the AI final how many other POTYs were in the same boat?

Rory Woods got MOTM after we were pipped by Kerry in the 2007 quarter final. I can't remember if he was able to say much as he was so disappointed we just lost.

I also remember McManus won MOTM against the Dubs in the league a couple years ago, after scoring 12 pts but we lost by a point.

Ah yeah poor Rory woods that day. It was the toughest interview ever as he was totally gutted to lose that game

On the Monaghan theme I recall a very young Tommy Freeman coming on as a sub against Cavan in an ulster semi final in the early 2000s midway through the first half. He went on to kick maybe 3 or 4 points from play and got motm on rte (or maybe bbc). Monaghan lost that game by a couple of points

You are right gilly. He was phenomenal that year - I think he was also man of the match in the club final with Sarsfields.

Declan Maxwell got the RTE MOTM against Galway in a televised live game in the Connacht championship in Salthill. He destroyed Finian Hanley!

Seamus Hickey v Kilkenny in 2014 (I think). I've never seen a person so choked up getting the award (for reasons other than getting the award, obviously).

Conor McManus got man of the match against Dublin in the 2016 league game in croke park he got 12 points that day and stole the show. We lead Dublin by 6/7 points at one stage that day untill Bernard brogan got the winner. The one that got away

The falcon at that presentation was one of the more bizarre moments at a MOTM award

first one I ever remember was Laois hurler John Tayor getting Man of Match against Kilkenny in 1st round of Championship in 1984, I think Kilkenny won 4-15 to 1-09...Taylor had a great game for Laois though that day....
