neither of these statements are any bit true.
Some AIL attendances are poor but its an all country league. junior 1/2 competitions with more local teams can get much better attendances
and care to explain how the pro14 is a mickey mouse competition and what is a mickey mouse competition anyway?"
I wouldn't take the AIL attendances as an indicator of much, Rugby is far healthier and more popular than when the AIL was flying 20/25 years ago.

I'd have to agree the Pro14 is a bit of a mess though. You have Glasgow coming over to play Munster missing 25 because of injuries and the 6 nations. Irish teams are restricted from playing half the games for the thing is more often than not played out with half second string players. It's handy to try players out for the big competition , the Champions Cup.

It's similar enough to our own GAA leagues in ways, big teams use it to try out players for championship and if they happen to be there abouts at the end they will give a push to win it. No team is going to show their hand too much in the league if they are meeting the same team in the championship (or Champions cup in Rugby) shortly after.

Typical of the 2 sports then, Rugby people try to big up the Pro14 while GAA people run down their league - ah sure tis only the league!!

In spite of this the GAA leagues are growing massively in popularity with attendances rising massively in recent years."
It is a mess for the reasons you say, not close to full strength teams which means standards are lower, not great attendances. But there can be some good open games as there's less pressure to perform. In that sense it's, as Witnof says, a Mickey Mouse tournament as it's not taken as seriously as Champions Cup. But, no more than some other sports when it's a big competition with more at stake there are boring games where teams are fearful of losing rather than go out to win.

Rugby has evolved immensely since AIL was in its hey day and it was in its heyday even 15 years ago
I wouldnt call the pro14 a bit of a mess and its far from just handy for trying out players for the champions cup. Some irish players dont play all the time but thats simply basic squad rotation and to help players have longer careers. Quite different to the GAA leagues considering the pro14 and champions cup are played at same time which isnt case in GAA. Teams very much can and do show their hand in pro14...

Replying To galwayford:  "The GAA should try and reach out a bit more to the diaspora who arrive through Dublin airport especially. I always see big adverts for the European rugby games in the arrivals hall. Surely GAA people could try and hire some space for GAA publicity. Also I have said it time and time again, GAA clubs should try and encourage the use of An Gaeilge more. And also maybe Irish dancing. Become "Gaelic hubs" in other words. How about an Irish dancing championship in Croke park? Or a Gaelic only zone? Cén fáth nach bhfuil aon gaeilge ins a lán de na clubanna Gaeil.
Don't let the GAA end up in the ludicrous situation where the local Rugby club is regarded as being the place to go for the culture and craic! It has happened with the anthem, it is said ( silly imho) that the Rugby crowd are more respectful to Amhrán na bhFiann then the GAA."
You have some valid points. I love rugby myself, but grew up playing and loving Gaelic football predominantly. I have posted before about the amount of kids now turning up at longford rugby club, compared to years ago. My nephew is Jonny Sexton mad, and wants every different leinster and Ireland top for his birthdays and Christmas. This is because most of his buddies are the same. Leinster are continually promoting the game of rugby. There will be Rugby summer camps down here along with leinster pre season rugby training. I more or less have to drag him to longford and meath tomorrow.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw something, that 25 yrs ago would never have happened. St mels college here in Longford, was/is an esteemed Gaelic football college. Numerous leinster senior A titles along with 7 or 8 All Ireland's. I can't recall the last time that Mels won the leinster title, maybe early noughties. I think their last All Ireland was 1987.

I now learned that mels, have a very progressive rugby structure in place and this year, subsequently won the development colleges competition. I see another school from longford moyne also contested the plate competition final. For a time yrs ago moyne were competitive with mels in the colleges gaa. Both are now rapidly progressing in the game of rugby.

As I said I love rugby and leinster are to be commended, for the work and promotion they are doing. Unlike their GAA equivalent, they are not forgetting about counties like my own, that are outside the top 5 or 6, and know there is talent to be sourced in every county in the province, including outside the m50.

The gaa have been warned, and if they don't act, they deserve what they get. They can have their super 8's to generate capital for the organization. Super 8's isn't much addition to a lot of so called weaker counties., In 20 yrs it could be a super 4 or a super 2.

Up Longford!!......a win by 2 pts tomorrow (v meath)......and please god my nephew will want a blue and gold Jersey!!!!!!!

Unfortunately the more I follow GAA year after year the more I become convinced it is almost like FIFA in its corruption, collusion and wanting the big names to succeed. Where the strong get stronger and the weak get weaker

The people's game ... it is still that undoubtedly at club level within counties. But at inter-county level it is tiring into an elitist select few who the GAA and the TV stations want to succeed and who get the big money and forget the rest.

Take my own county Leitrim- we played just 4 Division 4 league games. Our games against london and Waterford called off because of weather and deemed not necessary to play by GAA cos none of us could be promoted. Now it's meant to be the people's game !! where all treated equally! Us and Waterford and london (i also believe limerick footballers had a div 4 game called off) told basically we don't matter football wise. Would Dublin or tyrone or Galway or Kerry or mayo or any div 1 or 2 league games be scrapped??? Yet we were . It is an outrage

GAA nepotism for div 1 and 2 family members

Like that famous novel , Animal Farm, said-....

...On this farm all animals are equal ....... it's just some are more equal than others

I think you are losing the run of yourself - somewhere in there you have some valid points re postponement of games etc. But the reality is this, not a lot want to hear or read it, but when you pit a county with 55,000 people against counties with multiples of that - not even Animal farm could do justice to the gulf in potential, The reality is everyone is unequal at Inter-county level in Football it can't be any other way.

Very proud of the team Galwayford. I lived in meath, so little bit sweeter. Great work being done at underage, but at senior level, the lack of playing population comes to the fore a bit.

I suppose nobody outside of longford wouldve saw it coming, but we think they're a talented bunch. Thought they were the best team today and probably should've had a couple of goals, which could be costly down the line.

Belief in themselves is the key now, no matter what happens against the dubs. Pity it's not even at a neutral venue, but we'll go and give it a lash!!

Wasnt sure where to put this. But its weekend of first round of football qualifiers, virtually all today and then the final round of leinster hurling round robin is on today. Yet twitter is dominated by 3 rugby internationals. What do people make of this??

Well I'm not on Twitter and won't ever be. I presume a sizeable percentage (maybe even a majority) of other GAA people aren't either. Believe it or not, there is life outside Twitter.

What was more buzzard was Newstalk previewing the qualifiers...half hour before Limerick v Mayo they go into a pc discussion about women's rugby and how to make it more high profile...utter garbage.

I couldn't imagine a GAA discussion breaking out before a round of round of rugby games.

I think we need a dedicated gas station / channel for Gaa during the summer. Although in fairness there are some good podcasts out there

I know full well there's life beyond twitter but if these are the only things you take from my post then you completely missed the point of what i posted.
We hear constantly that rugby isnt big in ireland and bla bla bla. Yet on a day with plenty of qualifiers and round robin games in hurling yet social media is dominated by rugby internationals and more tweets about internationals not even including ireland then the hurling/gaelic games.

Both make the point very well. It's a sign of the social media age. Plenty of good stuff and genuine people on Twitter but too many bots and trolls and lack of regulation for my liking. GAA and Rugby will use Twitter to publicise games and events but wouldn't be naive enough to equate Twitter interest with live attendees and money in the bank.

The GAA need imho, to give the championship matches to TG4. Tá grá ar TG4 ann ar na CLG. Newstalk, TV3 and Sky are basically English language stations, with Rugby and Soccer the main games. TV3 in particular are a very Rugby orientated channel.
Is é mo thuairm go bhfuil Tg4 an stáisiun is fearr. RTE can keep some of the games. But the GAA need to stop both Sky and TV3 coverage. The GAA need to get behind the Irish language- and do it now! Slán

When the deal was struck with SKY for exclusive coverage, my understanding was that Sky would only be showing games that RTE would have no intention of showing and that the number of games on terrestrial TV would not fall. In football RTE's coverage of provincial championships and qualifiers has been abysmal..that is now set to continue with Sky taking the larger proportion of games from now on.

Both channels do not have exclusive rights to the all-ireland semi-finals and final with both channels showing the concluding stages of the championship.

However, from the Round 3 qualifiers up to and including the Super 8's..RTE will show 7 games exlusively and sky will show NINE games exclusively..that means that for 9 key games in the latter stages of the championship, the vast majority of people will have no access to the game

People's Game?...not anymore it's not and watch what happens over the coming years...
